Job Summary: Professional who oversees all aspects of Sacrament preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation for those who have reached the age of reason, with emphasis on the kerygma and the invitation to discipleship. Engages parents as the primary educators of their children; coordinates sacramental preparation programs; works collaboratively with Catholic school principal and staff regarding Sacramental preparation in the Catholic schools; acts as a resource for parish programs in the area of catechesis. Attention should be given to sensitivity to cultural diversity. Essential Job Duties: Offer year-round Christian initiation for all who approach the Church for Sacraments, have reached the age of reason and who are uncatechized. Offer proximate preparation for catechized 2nd graders for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Eucharist, empowering parents as primary catechists. Offer proximate preparation for catechized high school students and adults for Confirmation. Work closely with the school to offer proximate preparation for Sacraments to 2nd and 8th grade student and OCIA when needed. Leadership: Identify, recruit, and provide on-going formation for catechists and other volunteers. Supervise the Associate Director of Discipleship Formation Integrate the principal tasks of catechesis into OCIA. These include: to promote knowledge of the faith; to provide liturgical education; to support moral formation; to foster prayer; to educate for community life; and to prepare members of our faith communities to be open to the missionary dimension of our faith. Oversee development and implementation of curriculum; develop, select, and instruct others in use of texts and resources. Supervise Confirmation preparation programs, First Reconciliation, and First Communion. Provide opportunities for deepening catechesis for adults (Bible studies, speaker series, etc.). Collaborate closely with young adult ministries to provide catechesis. Provide tools for adults to deepen their spiritual lives, such as books, pamphlets and online resources (Formed.org, Hallow, etc.). Responsible for Ananias training, inviting all parishioners to participate and be equipped to walk with another in their spiritual journey. This is an important aspect of sponsor and catechist training as well as empowering parents. Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) Plan, publicize, and schedule OCIA inquiry sessions as needed. Interview OCIA inquirers. Schedule sessions of catechumen/candidate formation. Development OCIA curriculum. Development OCIA discernment method for catechumens/candidates. Schedule rites with Pastor. Solicit, train and assign sponsors for catechumen/candidates Plan Easter vigil and reception with Pastor and other team members. Secure proper documentation from catechumen/candidates. Confirmation Establish and update confirmation program as necessary. Schedule confirmation speakers. Schedule, plan, and practice the various rites. Secure proper documentation from confirmation candidates. Sponsor Formation Sponsors are critical in the OCIA and discernment process. Will recruit sponsors; train in the art of accompaniment and discernment. Catechist Formation Teach adults; motivate and train others to teach. Recruit catechists, discerning and calling forth their gifts and talents; train and supervise catechists for certification according to diocesan policy and procedures, including ensuring adherence to all Safe Environments policies and procedures. Facilitate development of a faith community among catechists; devise appropriate procedures and tools for evaluating programs and personnel. Administration and Budget Management Articulate effective administrative policies and procedures. Identify problems and manage conflicts. Plan, organize, and manage time according to priorities and responsibilities. Draft budget and monitor the use of funds. Provide strategic direction to the above ministries. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Understand the proper use of catechesis within the Church's mission of evangelization. Have knowledge and understanding of catechetical principles. Understand Catholic doctrine and beliefs as presented in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, the Documents of Vatican II, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the National Directory for Catechesis, and other relevant Church documents. Have good verbal and written communication skills. Have good interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style. Have good computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office). Have a demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards. Have good organizational skills. Charisms Passionate about the work of making disciples; supports the parish mission and vision statements. Possesses some of the following charisms: Administration, Encouragement, Evangelism, Pastoring, Leadership. Minimum Qualifications: Fluent in both English and Spanish - reading, speaking and writing Education, Experience and Trainings: Master's Degree in Theology (MA, MAPS, or MDiv) or Catechetics. Catechetical experience required. Sacramental preparation experience required. Adult Formation experience preferred Licenses/Certifications: Valid Texas driver's license. Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period. Ministerial Character The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish (St. Louis King of France Catholic Church and School - Austin, Texas) which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clergy and lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.
