Description Young-Williams currently has several Vet Assistant positions available at multiple locations in Knoxville. We have our Shelter Clinic located at 3201 Division Street and our Spay/Neuter Solutions Clinic located at 6400 Kingston Pike. The best fit will be determined during the interview process. The Shelter Clinic is located inside Young-Williams Animal Center, the Municipal Intake Shelter for Knox County. The clinic is responsible for the daily care of all animals at the shelter. Here you will insure that all animals receive the best care as they find their new home or get reconnected with a loved one. The Spay/Neuter Solutions Clinic is located in the Animal Village location of Young-Williams Animal Center. This clinic provides low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for public animals. At this location you will help Young-Williams reduce the number of unwanted and homeless pets in our region. There is also a Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic ("The Spay Shuttle") that services various locations across Knox County. The Vet Assistant position is part of our medical support team, where quality care is provided to every patient, every day--in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. While there are some variations in the responsibilities for each clinic location, below are the essential functions and overview of expectations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Patient Care & Treatment Responsibilities Assist Veterinarian and Surgical Team with initial triage of patients Report health or behavior concerns to the Veterinarian Ensure accurate patient information is obtained and recorded, and each patient is properly identified Provide excellent patient care. Assist in the safe and humane handling and restraining of animals throughout the surgical process. Use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals. Prepare patients for surgery. Work with the medical support team to ensure efficient surgery flow. Administer Anesthesia Monitor patients for all stages of care, from admission to discharge. Assist Veterinarians in surgery as needed. Assist with preparation and administration of patient vaccinations, test, medications, and treatments as directed Client Service Responsibilities Assist in obtaining history and information from pet owners or shelter systems as necessary Be prepared to answer common questions about each procedure. Perform all aspects of discharge, including distribution of patient records, post-op instructions, and educational materials. Departmental Responsibilities Post-surgery cleanup including, but is not limited to, scrubbing instruments, operating autoclave, cleaning surgery suite & clinic, kennels & cages, and process laundry. Follow shelter protocols pertaining to disease control & sanitation. Assist with routine inventory supply lists to ensure adequate supply levels. Restock supplies at end of each day. Participate in staff meetings to share ideas and suggestions for improving animal care and/or efficiency, and the quality of the organization as a whole. EQUIPMENT USE Operate & maintain surgical equipment, anesthesia systems, lights, and animal containment systems. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as PC, printer, copy machine, fax machine, filing cabinets, telephone, as well as cleaning equipment and supplies. PHYSICAL/MENTAL/SENSORY DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for long periods of time (6-8 hours/day); walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift or move up to 40 pounds by self, and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Regular exposure to a variety of animals and their bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, bites, and scratches. Duties are performed indoors in a high-noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at the shelter, or on-location for various activities. Must use self-care skills to combat compassion fatigue. Potential and Prolonged Exposures Prolonged exposure to various aqueous solutions such as chlorhexidine and spectra soap. Prolonged exposure to isopropanol ("alcohol") and hydrogen peroxide. Potential exposure to formalin solution. Potential/Prolonged exposure to isoflurane gas. Prolonged exposure to quarternark ammonium cleaners and bleach. Prolonged exposure to pressurized steam. Potential exposure to sharps including needles and surgical blades. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time position. Work hours may vary and evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required. TRAVEL The employee will be based at either the Shelter, Village Spay/Neuter or Spay Shuttle and will be expected to report to the appropriate location based on the assigned schedule. SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES Positive, optimistic outlook. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment. Knowledge of, or ability to learn basic veterinary medical concepts including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks. Previous animal handling and understanding of animal behavior (e.g. identify aggressive or fearful behavior). Superior reflex & response time. Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent is required. Associates Degree is preferred. Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of veterinary or animal care experience is required. Must have a valid Tennessee Driver's License. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook is required, and experience with database software is strongly preferred.
