CHARLES BORROMEO SEMINARY - SPIRITUAL YEAR PROGRAM LOCATION: St Matthews Church in Conshohocken JOB TITLE: Evening Cook CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt/Part-time, Seasonal DEPARTMENT: Spiritual Year REPORTS TO: Director, Spiritual Year Program SUMMARY: To manage food service at the community evening meal by preparing supper for approximately twenty people while also assisting with menu preparation, food ordering/purchasing, and food storage - in cooperation with the Lunch Cook and in consultation and compliance with the guidelines established by the Director of Spiritual Year. The Evening Cook must be committed to maintaining a high level of standards among staff and seminarians in sanitation, quality of food, boundaries, and work ethic. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares supper on most weekdays, especially on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Before the start of each semester, the Director of the Spiritual Year will supply a calendar identifying foreseen dates of service and the meals to be served on them. The Director will, in a timely fashion, inform the Evening Cook of any changes to that calendar and in the number of those expected at the meal. (On a rare occasion, a guest may join the community for the meal.) Able to provide meals for a guest/s, with advance notice Punctual arrival for work and adequate notification (at least one week) of any days when it is impossible to work (weather and sickness excluded) Devote four (4) hours of work to weekday meal preparation and food planning, typically from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM: approximately sixteen (16) hours each week. Collaborates with the Lunch Cook in food ordering and/ or food shopping Will set a menu and plan food orders/shopping Typically, a menu for the following week's meals is finalized by the end of the day on Tuesday. A food order or shopping trip will be submitted/happen twice weekly. Submitting that order should take no more than one hour of time and should happen in the midst of the workday. Food orders, submitted electronically, will be picked up and/or delivered twice weekly, devoting thirty minutes to each trip. Will generate other food purchases as needed Will communicate with Lunch Cook to create the list of food items needing to be purchased Regular meetings with the Director to discuss such items as menus, food ordering, calendar, and seminarian needs Provide a healthy variety of meals while accommodating special diets (e.g. gluten free, lactose intolerance, food allergies) Ability to prepare meatless meals on Fridays Collate and tally food shopping receipts and any reimbursements Maintain safe and clean kitchen General calendar Job runs from mid-August to mid-June with the following breaks: Labor Day weekend Seminarian Retreat in early October Long (Columbus Day) weekend in October Forty Hours in November (November 1-2-3-4) Thanksgiving week Christmas and January Immersion program (no work from late December to late February)* Seminarian Retreat for a week (around March 1) Holy Week and Easter Week Thirty Day Retreat (from mid-May to mid-June) *Job would include a day in January, and three days in mid-June QUALIFICATIONS: To execute this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and professionally. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) /, or minimum of 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk or hear.
