*Currently we have two open TRiO College Mentor and Tutor positions that we are looking to fill.The TRiO College Mentor and Tutor provides academic tutoring and mentorship to assist middle and high school students enrolled in IU5's Federal TRiO programs: Talent Search and Upward Bound Math and Science. These programs are dedicated to identifying and supporting low-income, first-generation college bound students in successfully progressing from middle school through postsecondary programs. Qualifications Required: - Currently enrolled in a local four-year college- Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the targeted subject matter- Work comfortably with students from diverse backgrounds- Effective communication and organizational skills Desired Qualifications: - Preferred candidates will be former TRiO participants or individuals with a similar background (low-income, first generation college students) Essential Functions and Responsibilities: - Tutor middle and high school students in the academic areas of mathematics, English language arts and reading, and science - Adhere to a consistent tutoring schedule developed based on needs of the program and the regular availability of the tutor- Maintain log of student contacts and complete written record of tutoring services provided, documenting topics covered- Provide mentoring during the Penn State Behrend Summer Programs and Rising 9th Grade Camp upon availability- Attend field trips as chaperone, upon availability- Maintain student and departmental confidentiality Performance Factors/Job Competencies: - Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to explain complex instructions in an easily understandable fashion. - Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment. - Must be flexible and able to tolerate many situations and personalities. Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. Incumbent must be able to sit at desk for extended periods of time. This role routinely uses standard office equipment with a vast majority of the time utilizing computers to complete daily tasks. Due to travel outside of the home office, candidates are required to have reliable transportation to attend job related duties, meetings, seminars, and trainings.
