Position Overview The Society is looking to expand its Information Technology team by hiring a Data Scientist to support implementation, maintain the structure and organization of data, and be part of the team that's focused on initiatives that increases overall efficiencies for data and decision making across the organization. This is a new position for the organization. In order to engage with and serve our constituents better, the Society is embarking upon a transformational technology project to consolidate our multiple repositories of data and the processes that generate the data into a single CRM. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with our competitions, outreach and equity programs and our award-winning science journalism. You will get to interact with stakeholders and subject matter experts across various disciplines like - Competitions and Awards Management, Marketing, Fundraising & Engagement and Advertising. During our programs and competitions, you have the opportunity to directly interact with competitors and participants who engage with the technology solutions you will be working on. These competitors represent the future of science and have gone on to become Nobel Laureates, MacArthur Fellows and titans of industry. We value strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to contribute in a fast paced environment as an individual and as part of a team. To perform the job successfully, this candidate must have knowledge of data analytics techniques as well as a solid understanding of risk management, agile methodologies and be able to contribute to building and working with a positive team. Candidates should be able to gather and analyze information, document requirements, build data architecture and roadmaps for projects, review work products created by developers and vendors along with identifying problems in a timely manner, and prioritize objectives and goals effectively. This position will report to the Director of Business Systems. This is an exempt position. Responsibilities Responsible for assimilating, interpreting, and analyzing data trends throughout the operation to support the entire organization's ability to make data driven decisions. Work with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging company data to drive business solutions. Mine and analyze data from the organization's databases to drive optimization and improve development to align with business strategies. Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data-gathering techniques. Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy. Knowledge of statistical techniques and concepts (regression, properties of distributions, statistical tests and proper usage, etc.) and experience with applications systems. Experience creating and using advanced dashboards using statistics: regression, simulation, scenario analysis, etc. Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages: SQL, R, etc. Experience working with and creating data architectures. Gather and document requirements and change requests along with creating and maintaining other functional documentation Assist with the implementation and support of business information systems across multiple departments Evaluate data from business processes, uncover areas for improvement, and assist with implementing solutions Perform requirements analysis and documentation and communicate the results of data analysis efforts to stakeholders Effectively communicate insights and plans to cross-functional team members and management Ensure solutions meet business needs and requirements Update, implement, and maintain procedures and prioritize initiatives based on business needs and requirements related to data analysis Qualifications Excellent written, analytical, problem-solving, and verbal communication skills Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities Ability to work in a team environment Motivated, self-directed, results-oriented, and customer-focused Detail-oriented and possess a desire for quality Experience in working on distributed or remote teams Understanding of software development life cycles (agile, waterfall, iterative) Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee usually works in an office setting. Our office is located near the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations. Due to the pandemic, the Society is operating on a hybrid work model until June 30, 2023. Ideally this position is based in the metropolitan area of DC, MD, or VA; however, consideration may be extended for remote opportunity. Position Type and Expected Hours This is a full-time, exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Light travel for some of the organization's events is necessary in this position. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's degree from a College or University or four years of related experience Additional Information Society for Science has mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for employees coming into the office and attending Society events.
