The Stony Brook School, an independent, faith-based boarding school, is seeking to expand its College Counseling department through hiring another experienced college counselor or an experienced educator/writer/counselor interested in being trained as a college counselor. The ideal candidate will possess the enthusiasm, dedication, and desire to effectively guide or learn to guide both students and parents through the college application process. The Stony Brook School believes strongly in the idea of fit, matching the needs of students with the college. Therefore, the college counselor must possess strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to not only assess the strengths of students, but also be able to see the potential in each student. The college counselor will work closely with the Co-Directors of College Counseling in enhancing the vision and mission of the college counseling department. The ideal applicant will possess: A strong identification with the Christian mission of the school, including a desire to mentor students and to challenge students to understand themselves in light of Christian teachings. Excellent writing and communication skills Ability to give excellent feedback to students about their writing Emotional intelligence, collegiality, a collaborative and empathetic spirit Sensitivity to the needs of students and parents and the ability to be both supportive and candid throughout the college application process Strong organizational and time management skills Flexible availability, including ability to collaborate with the college counseling team during some evenings and weekends at critical times of the application process Ability to meet deadlines Strong computer skills Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree (or higher) preferred. Here are also some preferred experience or qualifications, but we may choose to work with the right candidate to grow professionally in these areas: 3-5 years of college advising or college admissions experience is preferred. Alternatively, a candidate with a background in writing, education, or counseling is a plus. Ability to think strategically and collaboratively about the college process and to advise students and parents accordingly A comprehensive understanding of the needs of domestic, international, day, and boarding students Responsibilities: Help with editing and reviewing essays and college applications Provide individualized college counseling to the junior and senior class Write compelling and comprehensive letters of recommendation for students Develop and maintain strong relationships with college admissions professionals Stay current in the college admissions profession by visiting colleges, attending and presenting at workshops, and participating in conferences Assist with occasional programming for students and parents Work collaboratively as a member of the college counseling team, including assisting the Co-Directors of College Counseling, the Academic Dean, and the Head of School on special projects or assignments. This will include, but is not limited to, being a member of the academic advising team. All other duties as assigned by the Co-Directors of College Counseling. The duties described above are to serve as guidelines for, not limitations to, the job of College Counselor. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the college counselor may be responsible for other duties as well, including and not limited to advising, coaching, chaperoning, teaching and supervising residential life-depending on the needs of the school and the background/interests of the individual.
