The Stationary Engineer is responsible for effective and efficient delivery of quality plant operations, maintenance, repair and construction services throughout the South City Hospital. Works with administrators, directors, managers, supervisors and employees to provide a safe and customer focused environment. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Operates, maintains and repairs power plant equipment, such as pumps, air compressors, generators, motors and steam boilers to provide utilities (I.E. light, heat and power). Performs preventive maintenance on plant equipment and systems as scheduled or necessary. Cleans, paints and maintains surfaces to protect and enhance the plant environment. Works in an accurate and efficient manner and in accordance with all established hospital department and equipment standards at all times. Accurately reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions and records data in a accurate and timely manner at all times. Periodic inspection, cleaning, and replacing of meters and gauges. Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals (preventive and periodic maintenance) per established standards to detect malfunctions or the need for repair, adjustment lubrication, cleaning or painting. Assists with casualty prevention tasks. Tasks include working with the fire alarm system, accomplishing fire drills, sprinkler drop tests, smoke and fire tests, and other testing of safety devices. Documents accomplishment of tests and any results of tests. Initiates measures as identified during casualty prevention tasks. Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to: a) bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, b) switch to back-up equipment or systems, c) shut down equipment or d) resolve potential or real utility outages. Works directly with vendors as needed. Follows established industry and department procedures working in a safe and effective manner at all times. Performs daily and timely maintenance and on -the-spot adjustments by performing the following and other engineering skills: tightening/replacing fittings, pack/replace bearings, replace packing glands, gaskets, mechanical seals, valves, recorders, and gages. Cleans boilers (water/fire side). Replaces burners and other components. Performs hydro testing. Uses hand and power tools, oils and lubricates equipment. Accurately completes necessary documentation of the status and condition of the equipment inspected in accordance with established department policies and procedures. Initiates corrections if needed. Performs work using safe and proper procedures. Maintains skill and knowledge levels in proper use of personal protective equipment and in major safety programs such as Lock Out/Tag Out, confined Space, Burn Permit, Tuberculosis, Asbestos and Hazard communications. Accurately documents all related work. Keeps work areas clean and neat. Ensures he safe environment of assigned plant areas, mechanical rooms and job by maintaining and enforcing established policies and procedures. Performs water titration and other tests. Adds chemical additives when necessary to chemically treat water and to prevent scale build-up and to keep cooling towers and boiler lines clean. Properly documents actions. Reviews prior shifts' log book entries and records. Promptly and accurately records operation and maintenance actions in the operations logbook. Maintains required records, report statistics and properly files documentation. Documents material and supply orders and accounts for use of materials on daily work documents. Expands maintenance and operation experience on an ongoing basis and in accordance with established departmental guidelines through continuing education, on-the-job-training, and cross training in other fields and trades. Participates and assists in the training of co-workers, interacting in a positive and helpful manner at all times. Promotes teamwork in all actions with peers and superiors alike. Strives toward improving team efforts to meet department goals and mission, such as exceeding customer expectations and career broadening and development. Attends departmental meetings. Supports a professional team and team member appearance. Assist Manager in the annual development of department operating and capital budgets. Maintains awareness of department and hospital facility and equipment needs. Works with managers to ensure the needs are considered during the budget process. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE High School graduate or equivalent. Class I Stationary Engineer's license CFC certification preferred, but not necessary Two (2) years experience in a power plant setting preferred. A positive attitude toward co-workers, customers and visitors. Flexibility, versatility and reliability as a team player Excellent mechanical knowledge Good organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to operate, repair, take apart and rebuild HVAC, chilled/hot water and steam systems, pumps and motors Ability to use hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner Ability to read and work with wiring schematics, prints and diagrams. Good motor coordination and manual dexterity necessary for adjusting valves and using hand tools to repair equipment. Ability to work independently Ability to tolerate high stress levels
