The City of Ojai Recreation Department is now accepting applications for the Lifeguard position, for our aquatics program. Under immediate supervision, the incumbent provides lifeguard services for public swimming and during instruction. This position is a temporary, part-time, seasonal position, working up to 999 hours per fiscal year and paid on an hourly basis. Employee may work on weekends, evenings and holidays. CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS Lifeguard I is the entry-level classification in the Lifeguard series and is distinguished from the II-level by performance of only a portion of the duties assigned the journey-level classification and does not require the WSI certification. Lifeguard I is typically used as a training classification and incumbents have limited work experience. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks and performing lifeguarding duties. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Observes and assesses swimmers in the pool area from an assigned station to identify and prevent unsafe conditions or potential hazards. Explains and enforces pool rules to provide a safe and accident-free pool environment. Administers CPR and American Red Cross or American Heart Association first aid when necessary. Performs general pool and facility maintenance Collects program registration and fees, prepares records and activity reports in accordance with established procedure. Participates in program publicity and promotional activities. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE Must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment. Must successfully complete the physical assessment and complete interview process. Education in American Red Cross lifeguarding principles, and American Red Cross or American Heart Association lifesaving skills; water safety practices; leadership techniques and methods; and general pool maintenance functions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES The ability to rescue persons using Red Cross Lifeguard techniques; remain calm in emergency situations, maintain courtesy and communicate with diplomacy to secure voluntary compliance with facility policies and rules; prepare written reports and records, assist with daily maintenance of the swimming facility; and resolve problems efficiently using diplomacy and tact. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit, stand, and talk. Hearing and speaking sufficient to exchange information in person; vision in normal range with or without correction; audio-visual discrimination and perception for making observation; sitting, walking, standing, and swimming for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping kneeling, or crouching; reach with hands and arms, lift, push, and pull 50 pounds when responding to emergency lifesaving situations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool equipment; mental capability to observe people and situations and respond calmly in emergency situations. MENTAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this activity, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret situations; read and interpret data, information and documents; interact with City staff and different organizations; and members of the general public. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this aquatic position. Employee works in an outside aquatics facility environment, in seasonal climate and weather conditions; works with slippery surface conditions, where water and swimming pool chemicals are frequently encountered; and subject to emergency situations. Employee may be exposed to chemicals associated with a swimming pool; and to body fluids with the possibility of communicable disease. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess all of the following certificates at time of appointment: American Red Cross or Heart Association CPR-PR (Professional Rescuer).
