General Maintenance Worker - Parks, Rec, and Forestry

Title: General Maintenance Worker FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Purpose: The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance refurbishment and/or repair of parks and related facilities. This is skilled manual labor position of more than ordinary difficulty. Responsibilities include conducting maintenance and repairs on various park and related facilities, ensuring that parks and facilities adhere to existing codes and regulations; maintaining and servicing equipment; and helping coworkers in various maintenance endeavors. New assignments are accompanied by detailed instructions, but routine work will be performed independently. Work is subject to review in progress or upon completion. Essential Functions Duties and assignments may overlap depending on the operational needs of the department and staffing levels. The following are typical for this position and incumbents may not perform all of the listed and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties to address the department needs and practices. Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment. Operates and uses a variety of tools. Performs various inspections of parks, facilities, equipment, and amenities. Performs various maintenance duties. Ensures that pedestrian lights and electrical systems are working and are up to code. Conducts repairs as necessary to keep electrical systems in full working order. Ensures the park bathrooms, drinking fountains, and plumbing systems are all in full working order. Ensures that playgrounds are in full working order. Ensures that swimming pools and splash spray grounds are in full working order. Assists in routine maintenance of equipment. Maintains and repairs park irrigation systems. Performs general maintenance, construction, and repair of parks and facilities. Assists in the removal of ice and snow. Assists coworkers in the completion of various maintenance tasks. Performs other duties as required and/or assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge Knowledge of maintenance methods of parks grounds, buildings, and equipment. Knowledge of proper materials and equipment needed for projects. Knowledge of electrical, plumbing and building methods. Knowledge of small to medium equipment maintenance and repairs. Knowledge of irrigation maintenance principles and practices. Knowledge of playground maintenance principles and practices. Knowledge of swimming pool maintenance principles and practices. Knowledge of construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment. Mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. General functions and operations of municipal government Skills Determine work needed from visual inspections. Express and implement ideas on technical subjects clearly and concisely. Compile data analyze information and draw conclusions. Complete detailed work accurately. Work effectively with a wide range of people. Meet specified deadlines. Prioritize daily workflow. Work as a team member with other employees. Communicate effectively with others, both oral and written. Work autonomously when necessary. Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions. Deal with others in a professional manner. Maintain professional composure in heated situations. Follow departmental and City policies and procedures. Possess a strong customer service orientation. Be a team player. Abilities Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and/or holidays and overtime as needed. Ability to be flexible and hands-on, pitching in wherever needed. Ability to perform a variety of manual labor tasks. Ability to operate various types of light and heavy equipment and the ability to learn the proper operation procedures of specialized equipment. Ability to perform maintenance of parks grounds, buildings and equipment. Ability to identify proper materials and equipment needed for projects. Ability to perform maintenance to electrical, plumbing and building systems. Ability to perform maintenance to small to medium equipment . Ability to perform maintenance to irrigation systems. Ability to perform maintenance to playgrounds. Ability to perform maintenance to pools and splash pads. Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions. Demonstrated success in working with a diverse population while maintaining a focus on customer service and customer engagement. Must be able to read, write and speak English. Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age. Graduation from high school or equivalent. Three years of directly related experience in park and facility maintenance and operations. Possession of or ability to obtain a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months. Possession of, or ability to obtain OSHA - 10 certification within six (6) months.
