Camp Settoga Job Title: Division Unit Head Classification: Non-Exempt (Seasonal) Reports to: Staff Manager Position Purpose: To further the mission of the camp through daily management and supervision of campers and counselors. The mission of the Unit Head is to create and maintain open lines of communication with families about daily activities and programming of camp as well as the social and emotional development of their children. Communication with families is key as it allows them to connect with our camp through emails, camper blasts, and group photography. Essential Job Functions: Communication with families and written work Create and maintain relationships with families, including being the primary point of contact for families. Return all family phone calls, e-mails, and Bus Mail (Settoga) within 24 hours, including a plan with how to address any issues or concerns. Maintain strong communication with families leading up to and throughout the camp sessions. Address personally any issues, questions and concerns as they arise in communications with families. This may include simply being available to parents for positive reinforcement and to address concerns as well as navigating any issues, along with the Care Team and group counselors on site at camp. Communicate with families, including information from the group counselors and Program Director, camper elective choices, notable experiences, swim placement within the first week of the session, Tag Day or Maccabiah information. Supervise Head Counselor completion of written work (camper portraits in 4 th week of session; newsletters every week) Camp day-to-day Build relationships with the Unit's counselors to be able to support them in their supervision of campers. Build relationships with the campers in order to effectively navigate situations that arise and effectively communicate issues and solutions to camp families. Work closely with the Care Team to navigate camper and staff issues as well as effectively communicate action plans to families. Model leadership and good practices to counselors, including participation in activities and proper supervision of campers. Staff supervision Motivate and supervise staff in a positive and professional manner. Communicate camper and family issues in a timely manner to the Site Director and Care Team. Communicate staff issues in a timely manner to Staffing Director Mediate conflicts between campers, staff, or families Conduct counselor evaluations, end-of-summer review, goal meetings, and weekly unit wide meetings. Assist counselors in their professional growth and development Other Job Duties: Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to learn and build relationships with campers and staff, camp wide. Relationships: Unit heads will work closely with their Care Team partner to ensure the day to day flow of camp is safe, fun, and that campers and staff are supported. Unit heads will report to the Staff Manager daily and weekly for check-ins. Unit heads will manage counselor expectations and day to day responsibilities. Unit heads will be responsible for maintaining a close relationship with families and communicating daily by email and/ or phone. Qualifications : (Minimum qualifications and experience) In the process of an undergrad degree in Education, Early Education, Social Work or similar focus, preferably in final semester(s) Masters Degree or in the process of a master's degree is preferred 1-2 year classroom experience and/or work study Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Training and experience in working with children. Training and experience in working with teens (plus) Desire and ability to work in a flex work space: office and administrative work and outdoor camp space Experience in Google Suite: sheets, docs, forms, email, etc. The ability to manage counselors within camp "classroom" Organizational and task oriented mindset Physical Aspects of the Position: Ability to communicate and work with the assigned age group of campers participating and provide necessary daily instruction to campers and staff. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the camp. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. Some physical requirements of a unit head specialist could be endurance including standing, some bending, and stretching. Requirement for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to make projects and assist campers. Requires range of hearing and eyesight necessary to maintain a safe camp environment and carefully observe camper and staff day to day experiences.
