Camp Settoga Job Title: Program Specialist: Culinary Arts Classification: Non-Exempt (Seasonal) Reports to: A rts Director and the Assistant Director of Camps Position Purpose: To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of culinary activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers' age and abilities. Assist in the management of the culinary building and related equipment and supplies. Essential Job Functions: Develop and deliver a culinary arts program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers. Evaluate abilities of campers and include staff in activity participation. Design and deliver culinary activities that make use of different ingredients, make use of the camp's garden, and use the culinary resources most efficiently. Program using the camp cookbook to find recipes that are appropriate for camp. Evaluate the success of culinary arts programs Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures Support counselors in the kitchen and explain what their role is during the activity. Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures: cleanliness, safe utensil use, are aware of all camper and staff allergies, etc. Assist campers with the process and final product of the culinary arts period. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the culinary arts kitchen and space Maintain the culinary arts equipment, including utensils, pans, sharp knives, cutting boards, rolling pins, measure cups and spoons, etc. Ensure the security of culinary arts equipment and supplies, including inventory organization and proper food storage/ disposal, and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner. Communicate with the Arts Director about the needs of the Kitchen. Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. Clean culinary area, keeping it free of hazards and debris. Other Job Duties: Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to learn and build relationships with campers and staff outside of the kitchen. Relationships: Program Specialists who fall under the "Arts" will report to the Arts Director. The Arts Director will report to the Assistant Director of Camps. Qualifications : (Minimum qualifications and experience) Documented experience in the arts, particularly culinary instruction or documented training and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Training and experience in teaching culinary arts to children. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in a kitchen or near a campfire. Experience in program planning and recipe ordering ahead of time to ensure the kitchen is fully stocked. The ability to set up and clean up a work space. Physical Aspects of the Position: Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. Some physical requirements of a culinary arts specialist could be endurance including standing, some bending, and stretching. Requirement for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to make projects and assist campers. Requires range of hearing and eyesight necessary to maintain a safe culinary environment and carefully observe camper and staff participation.
