Classification: Internship Reports to: Director of Food and Nutrition Location: Multiple Locations - Main office and Supportive Housing sites in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. Some remote work Position Type: part-time Salary: unpaid Objective: Lantern champions the independence and wellbeing of New Yorkers impacted by or threatened with chronic homelessness. Our objective is to ensure that residents can find and maintain stable housing. We provide supportive housing and wraparound services for our residents in 16 sites across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. Our culturally competent programming promotes housing stability, wellness, dignity, and independence. This work addresses systemic inequity by helping to level the playing field for individuals and families who face housing instability, health disparities, barriers to education and employment, and other obstacles to self-sufficiency and wellness. Lantern programs provide residents with expert guidance in negotiating the practicalities that will enable them to stay housed in the long term. We work across generations to increase our residents' access to the resources, knowledge, skills, and support that can help them to escape the cycle of poverty; achieve their personal, economic, educational, and health-related goals; and participate fully in community life, thus promoting more vibrant and equitable communities. Students applying to this opportunity should be interested in food justice and addressing food insecurity. Essential Functions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work with the Director of Food and Nutrition programs in office projects, research and program organization. Support our team of culinary nutrition educators on delivering virtual and in person cooking classes at our Lantern sites, once or twice a week. Assist in creating and posting social media updates on upcoming events, such as cooking classes, field trips Help create flyers to promote Lantern Culinary Nutrition events and educational material regarding nutrition. Assist on organizing food justice awareness meetings among our young adults Complete other tasks as needed to support Lantern's Food and Nutrition Services work Internship description link Specific skills intern will gain/ strengthen Understanding of Lantern's goals and philosophy as a non-profit community organization Ability to demonstrate nutrition awareness education, using different modalities Capacity to cook time and cost-effective simple nutritious meals Ability to plan and create nutrition education materials for cooking classes and cooking class facilitation Excellent interaction skills when dealing with Lantern's population Data collection and community resource research skills Opportunity to make a change and help underserved individuals and families in NYC Promote food justice and work to address food insecurity among Lantern residents Required Education and Experience: Must be currently enrolled students attending City College of New York Interest in food justice and addressing food insecurity Interest in Nutrition Education, Food Systems and/or Food Justice Knowledge of basic cooking, or willingness to learn to cook simple dishes with our clients Must have strong communication skills, work ethic, and time management Should thrive in a collaborative environment and be open to asking for support Work Environment: This job operates in one of our supportive housing sites and works with a population who may experience mental illness, substance use, disability, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic illnesses. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs and/ or kneel.
