The Pre-Health Professions Advisor collaborates with the Department of Biological Sciences and the Health Professions Advisory Committee to support and coordinate activities related to the university's Pre-Health Profession programs. This position will provide individual and group advising to students interested in medical school, dental school, nursing school, veterinary school and other allied health professions schools, among other related health programs of advanced study (physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory care, clinical laboratory sciences, pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, etc.). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Advises students and alumni in the academic and co-curricular experiences necessary to become competitive applicants for advanced health professions programs, such as programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, physician's assistant, physical therapy, chiropractic, and allied health professions, among other related health programs of advanced study. Supports students and alumni in the coordination of (MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE) and related test preparation courses; letters of recommendation and evaluation forms; and coordinates early acceptance programs including student application processes; advises about events, volunteering, shadowing, and research opportunities. C Creates and facilitates workshops and group advising sessions on topics of interest to pre-health students such as speaker series events, tours of graduate health professional schools, lunch and learns with health professionals, and end-of-the-year events Interacts with external constituencies regarding health professions advising to include acting as the University's pre-health professions spokesperson at admissions and orientation events and communicating as needed with medical and other health professions schools; Develop partnerships with Enrollment Management to review transfer credit evaluations and identify common challenges for transfer students. Participates in recruitment activities with local and regional health/medical magnet or key high schools; Attends the annual Texas Association of Advisors of the Health Professions (TAAHP) conference. Plans and coordinates programs and other learning opportunities to enhance student engagement to include the Pre-Health Career Conference and the Pre-Health summer outreach programs, including a one-week pre-med camp and a four-day workshop for high school juniors/seniors in conjunction with the UT Health San Antonio Assists the Biology Chair and faculty members with administrative tasks; maintains data and statistics of the number of pre-health students, applications and acceptance rates; manages the completion of the annual Biology newsletter; maintains and updates the website in coordination with Communications. Maintains accurate records in the designated systems related to student advising, clinical sites and volunteer opportunities in compliance with FERPA and other campus, federal and state regulations Communicates current expectations and changes in health professional school admission processes and standards; attends career fairs and other health profession retention and recruitment seminars or workshops Serves as instructor, planning, and coordination for the Preceptorship in the Health Professions course (BL3330); Serves as the primary academic advisor for a subset of the department's majors and as the advisor for health profession related registered student organizations (RSOs); Serves as an advocate for student success Performs other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an accredited college/university required 3 years of advising experience or 2 years of health careers advising experience can be substituted; demonstrated success working with, first-generation students or similar success in innovative heath profession advising may be considered Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance Must maintain a valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance, and complete the University Van Driver Training within 90 days of employment date; Must have the ability to function as a team player in University activities including working some nights, weekends, occasional travel, and attending special events as necessary. Must have excellent counseling skills and the ability to work with a diverse student population in a supportive manner. Must have the ability to demonstrate advanced skills in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel); Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets and contact management systems to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university. Must have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; displays solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; works well independently and as part of a team. Must have strong self-judgment abilities. Use discretion to complete work assignments. Initiative is frequently required to complete work assignments. Must have the ability to demonstrate a capacity for leadership, and the commitment to work collaboratively with a diverse and dynamic community. Must have a high attention to detail and be able to organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Must be flexible in every aspect and able to respond to any situation quickly and adequately. Must have high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality due to access to confidential data relating to student personal files and recruiting information; will be expected to maintain the confidentiality of the advisor-student relationship, make appropriate referrals, and will be responsible for appropriate management of personal and academic student data. PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business. While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
