Job Title: Director, Strategic Communications & Public Relations Department: Communications and Digital Innovation Reports to: Chief Communications and Community Building Officer FLSA Status: Exempt Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid) Salary Range: $120,000 - $135,000 Application Materials: Resume & Cover Letter SUMMARY   The Director, Strategic Communications and Public Relations will be responsible for the development, direction, and implementation of the overall communications strategy for Independent Sector, in partnership with Senior Leadership. The Director will develop, manage, and execute communications products and media relations to disseminate key messages, project accomplishments, and storytelling to build visibility for Independent Sector, as well as support relationship building with members and the nonprofit sector. This position works in conjunction with the Chief Communications and Community Building Officer and the Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy to develop the annual organizational communications plan and aligning to identify and clarify mission goals and benchmarks for organizational success. The Director will also be responsible for the day-to-day communications activity for media engagement and various editorial projects to support initiatives at IS. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS    Strategic Communications Working closely with Senior Leadership, establishes and drives multi-channel communications strategy to align with IS mission goals, developing communications products and storytelling while managing outreach to the nonprofit sector and general public Maintains brand integrity across all platforms Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan and projects across discreet audiences in collaboration with the Independent Sector team and with stakeholders, such as members and the nonprofit sector in mind Write opinion and other thought leadership pieces on behalf of leadership, including the president and CEO, such as emails, blogs, opinion editorials, essays, and articles Leads strategy around the use of various communications tools, including but not limited to, websites, event platforms, databases, and online communities to drive engagement and drive IS messages to key audiences Fosters relationships with members and other strategic partners to help meet organizational engagement and revenue results Media Relations Collaborate with media, manage and build relations, conduct outreach and serve as the primary point of contact for journalists Foster existing relationships with media and develops new contacts with reporters Develop and pitch story ideas relevant to the organization's strategic objectives Maintain up-to-date media contact database Participate in media education initiatives in partnership with other organizations Conduct background research and prepares talking points for the President's media interviews Prepare written and digital materials (e.g., press releases, letters-to-the-editor, member outreach etc.) and develop messages, website content, publications, and other resource Publications Provide editorial direction and manage contributors and logistics to distribute IS newsletters, including Digest (weekly), and Voices for Good and ChangeWorks newsletters, both monthly newsletters Digest-the weekly IS newsletter of nonprofit news coverage Brand Management Work closely with all departments to ensure external communication and stakeholder engagement are consistent and effective Advise and train staff on ways to effectively leverage their relationships with stakeholders and community leaders to support the organization's broader communications goals Design and deliver communications training for staff, when needed, to ensure message alignment with stated goals and ensure all staff are trained to maintain IS brand and communication standards Other Liaises with the Public Policy and Sector Health (Research) teams Support initiatives to improve communication between departments and other internal groups Assess organizational needs and work collaboratively with department heads to develop proposals and implement recommendations that advance Independent Sector's mission Works closely with all departments to ensure external communication and stakeholder engagement are consistent and effective Serves as an advisor to all staff to maximize Independent Sector's outreach efforts Working collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy including backing up each other during pinch points, as well with all communications, marketing, and digital innovation colleagues Performs other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES   Interviews, hires and oversees training of direct reports  Oversees the daily workflow of direct report Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations  Motivates, disciplines and directs employees Directly manages one (1) employee Manager, Communications Manage all vendors, when needed and as appropriate depending on topic, associated with strategic communications and public relations including outside PR firms MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS   Experience and Education: Bachelor's degree in advertising, marketing, communications, or public relations and eight (8)+ years of progressively responsible communications experience in membership organization or with a vendor working directly with a membership organization; or High school diploma and 10+ years of progressively responsible communications experience in membership organization or with a vendor working directly with a membership organization One (1) year of supervisory experience Qualifications:   Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently Relationship builder with ability to easily collaborate across difference Ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels Excellent grasp of the evolving media environment and the political, cultural and economic impact of the changing landscape on nonprofit communications Successful multi-tasker who can manage immediate, short-term, and long-term projects simultaneously Demonstrates exceptional judgment, attention to detail, thoroughness, and follow through Must be able to organize and schedule work effectively even under urgent timelines Must be able to work flexible hours, including hours beyond the normal schedule when necessary Team player with a proven history of working collaboratively Broad or general knowledge of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector Awareness of diversity, inclusion, and equity (including race equity)'s impact on social change work, and willingness to engage on race equity in professional development and programmatic work Work Environment:   The work environment is a typical office environment. The noise level is usually quiet. Up to 10% travel may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. IS has implemented a hybrid working model. All staff will be required to work from the IS office on Tuesday and Wednesdays.
