The Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute has an opportunity for a Director of Veterinary Services who will be responsible for the planning and overall operations of our animal laboratory. This position will serve as attending veterinarian; manage and train facility staff; serve as voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); and collaborate with and provide guidance and support for investigators' research activities. This is a hybrid 30-hour per week position where work will be split between telework and an onsite presence in downtown Minneapolis, MN. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for planning and overall operations of the animal laboratory. Budget preparation and oversight. Ensure compliance with federal and state requirements for laboratory animal care use including Animal Welfare Act, NIH Guide and the requirements for accreditation by AAALAC. Serve as attending veterinarian. Provide veterinary medical care to laboratory animals and oversight of husbandry programs. Manage preventive medicine programs including rodent sentinel, vendor surveillance and quarantine programs. Provide guidance for protocol development and compliance with regulatory requirements. Perform veterinary review of protocols submitted to the IACUC. Serve as voting member of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Participate in IACUC facility/programming evaluations. Manage and train facility staff. Hire, supervise, mentor, develop and evaluate staff subject to agency human resources practices and policies. Collaborate with and provide guidance and support for investigators' research activities. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Education/Experience: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited college; certified by or be eligible for certification through the American College of Laboratory Medicine (ACLAM). Current Minnesota license to practice veterinary medicine with ten (10) years experience as a veterinarian. Five (5) years experience in a management position and previous experience in an academic environment preferred. Skill, Knowledge & Ability (SKA): Requires interaction with a diverse population. Must possess thorough knowledge of and experience with federal and state requirements for programs of laboratory animal care and use, including the Animal Welfare Act, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guide and the requirements for Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). Excellent interpersonal and team building and strong written/oral communication skills. Demonstrated leadership and organizational ability and self-confidence and the ability to work well under pressure. Must have excellent problem solving and be ability to delegate appropriately. Must possess the ability to collaborate, to compromise and to negotiate effectively. Must have strong human relations skills and foster effective working relationships. Maintains confidentiality, manages time effectively and displays high standards of attendance and punctuality.
