Reports to : Senior Policy Coordinator Position Status: Non-Exempt Term: Regular, Full-time. Occasional evenings and weekends required. Pay Range: $28-32/hour, commensurate with skills and experience. Location: Anaheim, CA. Staff are currently working a hybrid schedule, with three days in-person and two days remote. Requires some travel throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area (vehicle and driver's license required). Requirements: Must have proof of COVID-19 Vaccination/Boosters. About the Role: The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator will report directly to the Senior Policy Coordinator and is primarily responsible for supporting the development and implementation of CAIR-LA's policy and advocacy agenda, focusing on addressing priority issues of the Muslim community. This position will concentrate on conducting legislative research, building relationships with government officials and entities, producing informational material, and participating in advocacy engagements. The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator is an excellent communicator who is familiar with coalition building and state and local legislative processes. DUTIES & RESPONSIBITLIES: Support the development and implementation of a local/state policy and advocacy agenda on priority issues for the Muslim community in consultation with senior policy coordinator. Monitor, interpret, and summarize local and state legislative proposals and policies, and regional trends that impact Muslims. Assist in creating and implementing equitable policies in local/state legislative and budgetary processes, including planning advocacy strategies, such as local town halls, action alerts, and call-in campaigns, etc.. Maintain a local and state legislative interactions database, tracking systems, and advocacy program files. Support the policy department's participation on campaigns, projects, and publications such as voter guide, legal report, annual report, etc. Build and sustain strategic partnerships with community-based organizations, interfaith groups, and other allies working in diverse communities in Southern California. Participate in coalitions, draft letters, and assist in mobilizing the Muslim community around issues relevant to CAIR-LA's policy agenda. Conduct legislative research and analysis, draft policy briefs and factsheets, and advocate and develop legislation on issues pertaining to the Islamophobic treatment of Muslims, immigrant empowerment and integration, police brutality, and other civil rights matters. Coordinate and maintain strategic working relationships and communication with local and state policymakers, officials, key agencies (e.g Riverside University Health Systems) and others. Facilitate periodic local/state meetings and strategic engagements with legislators and officials and provide policy analysis to policymakers and their staff. Represent CAIR-LA in local/state political engagements, City Council/County meetings, legislative meetings, coalition spaces, media involvement, and other organizational efforts. Produce relevant educational materials including policy analysis reports, briefing documents, and fact sheets on local/state immigrant and immigration issues, legislative processes, and advocacy efforts for internal and external audiences (e.g staff, community members, legislators) as needed. Support writing policy statements, advocacy digital toolkits, talking points, sample letters, and other material to advance the CAIR-LA's policy and advocacy agenda, inform the community of policy updates, and encourage community engagement. Coordinate collaboration with CAIR departments and external partners to advance CAIR-LA's local and state policy agenda, including hosting educational trainings and workshops, leading working groups, and providing political updates. Support CAIR-LA's civic engagement work including, voter registration/engagement, and GOTV. All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties including day-to-day operational tasks and assisting with organizational fundraising events. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree required. Two years of policy or community organizing experience is required. Experience with base-building, coalition-building, and leadership development in a diverse community context is required. Familiarity, knowledge, and experience working with the American Muslim community on issues of policy is required. Experience with strategizing and campaign management is required. Experience in public policy and government affairs, specifically in a nonprofit organization, trade association, state legislature of Congress, or a state or federal agency is preferred. Knowledge of state legislative processes with an ability to apply that knowledge to coherent strategy development and implementation is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment. Passion for CAIR-CA's mission and values.
