YMCA Storer Camps is located near Jackson, MI on 1200 acres surrounding Stony Lake. General Function: The Barn Staff reports to the Barn Manager. These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals and Mission of the YMCA Storer Camps. Assist Barn Manager and Assistant Barn Manager with trail rides and lessons. Conduct horse sense classes, pony rides, arena rides, grooming activities, etc. in a fun, safe manner according to our policies. Feed and care for the horse herd and small animal barn according to instructions. Care of facilities and grounds. Repair and maintenance of equipment. Work as a team member to assist in the improvement of the program. Know How: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to work well alone and with others. Good judgment is vital, especially concerning the safety of our guests, staff, and animals. This person needs a strong work ethic and must be responsible. They need to be personable and able to deal with a frightened child or an irate parent. It is a physically demanding job. They need to be able to work outside all day in all kinds of weather. They need to be able to routinely lift 75 lbs. They must be comfortable around horses and other barn animals and have knowledge of care for these animals. Ability to teach about or ride different animals is a must, including advanced riding skills on horses. They must be able to communicate instructions in a fun yet informative manner. They need to be a team player that can work within the YMCA Storer Camps structure. They must be at least 16 years old and current in CPR and first aid (or willing to obtain certification within the first 90 days of employment). Essential duties and Responsibilities: Hay and grain horses and other animals according to the feed sheets. Note any changes on the feed sheets. Conduct horse sense classes; trail rides, grooming activities, arena rides, pony rides, etc. for our guests during the school year. Assist Riding Instructor with riding lessons and trail rides. Maintain safety standards. Responsible for health checks and medications for horses. Assist with the development and supervision of the riding program. Assist in facility and equipment upkeep (routine cleaning, repair and inventorying equipment and supplies, fencing, burring, barn cleaning and end of day procedures). Help maintain records on horses' health, feed, training and medication. Work according to the mission and four core values of YMCA Storer Camps. Perform regular tack checks, fittings and changes, plus tack cleaning, oiling and repairs. Assist in training new horses according to our standards and working with other horses to keep them fresh. Communicate openly and positively with other barn staff, program staff and program directors. Assist with horse transportation. Follow standards set by the Equestrian Director, Barn Manager and all licensing agencies Other duties as assigned. Why Work At The Y?
