The Biology Department at Carthage College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a focus in Genetics to begin August 2023. We seek a dedicated teacher-scholar to join our community. Ideal candidates will share our passion for teaching and inspiring students through the development and delivery of high-impact learning experiences.Biology at Carthage values active learning and hands-on problem-solving. Our students develop their skills and attitudes through practicing science alongside their professors in and out of the classroom. Our programs are rooted in the liberal arts, designed to emphasize student self-discovery and exploration and provide opportunities to grow in all facets of life. Biology students prepare for futures including professional healthcare and medicine, academic and industrial research, and graduate study in fields ranging from conservation to molecular genetics to paleontology.Successful applicants are expected to contribute to the teaching and advising needs of the undergraduate program as well as to engage undergraduate students in a collaborative, externally-funded scholarship. Ideal candidates will have a passion for teaching and inspiring students in the classroom and through research mentoring; an eagerness to employ modern best practices in inclusive learning and active pedagogy; and a strong commitment to the collegial and vibrant atmosphere of the department, the science division, and the college.Minimum Qualifications:- PhD in Biology (or related) with expertise and research experience in genetics.- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and education.- Demonstrated commitment to supporting and improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom.- Of particular interest is experience in genomics, computational biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, or biomedical engineering.Responsibilities:- Primary teaching responsibilities include the biology major core courses in genetics (with laboratories); participation in introductory biology (with laboratories - Phage Hunters), and the development of upper-level courses in the candidate's area of expertise to serve biology and related majors.- The development of an active research program with undergraduates and the pursuit of external funding.- Future development and teaching of innovative courses that contribute to other STEM and/or the general education curriculum.The Carthage Biology Department is housed in a recently expanded and renovated science center that includes more than $1.5 million in instrument and equipment investments. The College offers small class sizes and the opportunity to work closely with undergraduates in both the classroom and laboratory. We are part of the Mid states Consortium for Math & Science, which offers our faculty opportunities to participate in career-development workshops and conferences for student research and networking.
