Mission Fork Union Military Academy's Mission is to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military structured environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, responsibility and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth. In this mission, our School Counselor is at the heart of our Leadership program and fosters personal development with daily interaction and the ability to teach, advise and coach our Cadets. Description The School Counselor is responsible for assisting FUMA cadets with all aspects of mental health, counseling, and wellbeing while on campus. Futher the School Counselor will be working in conjunction with coaches, TAC Instructors, Academics, and other faculty to best support our cadets. The School Counselor will contribute knowledge and skills within their scope of training, and instilling an environment of inclusion and safety for the cadets on campus and shall be further willing to adhere to, enforce, encourage, and instruct per the Academy's mission and core values to all Cadets. Essential Job Functions Supervisory Responsibilities: None unless deemed necessary by the Director of Health Services Duties/Responsibilities: Interact daily with cadets Work with the Crisis Team Counsel cadets, staff, and families related to adjustment issues Work in conjunction with the Infirmary Staff regarding student mental health and wellness Consult with the Academic team to help with identifying potential learning differences, mentoring strategies, and best practices related to mental health and well ness Recommend resources to staff, faculty, and families related to mental health and wellness Work in conjunction to the risk management team regarding best practices Guide cadets in the development of skills and strategies to identify and deal with their potential problems Review admissions files with Admissions team as needed Offer basic counseling support as needed and recommend therapeutic resources when necessary Prepare and maintain proper treatment records and reports Evaluate physical or mental conditions based on review of information provided by the client Develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical experience and knowledge Support cadets and families in crisis Acts as a client advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations Contribute knowledge, skills, and experience as part of the Academy training department Organize professional development seminars and/or events relevant to mental health issues Assist in the retention processes of cadet athletes in their athletic and academic endeavors Additional duties may be assigned as deemed necessary Required Skills/Abilities: Must have a working knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions and for career or educational counseling and guidance Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity and cultures and their history and origins Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services Knowledge of child and adolescent behavior, development and social influences Ability to follow confidentiality policy, procedure, and laws Strong interpersonal skills Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite Strong organizational skills Strong written and verbal communication skills Detail oriented Problem solving abilities Ability to plan, organize, implement, and manage multiple priorities and projects Ability to adapt to real time situations, and honor chain of command in real time Ability to be on call for mental health situations or emergent crisis while cadets are on campus Either hold currently, or be able to obtain, certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid. Education and Experience: Must have a Master's Degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field Current Virginia state credentials or licensing is required. Virginia State Licensure to practice is required. Previous experience working with youth is preferred - behavioral background preferred Fork Union Military Academy is a veteran friendly employer Physical Requirements: Expected hours of work are flexible and dependent on boarding school schedule. When cadets are on campus a minimum of five 8-hour days are expected per week. Some afterhours duties may be deemed necessary based on mental health crisis or need for crisis prevention. Hours of work may be conditionally flexible during seasonal events, or as directed by the Academy's needs or Director of Health Services Ability to climb three flights of stairs and carry at least 25 pounds Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 25 pounds as needed Ability to sit, stand, or squat as needed. Must successfully pass a background check, pre-employment drug screen, and random drug testing Prolonged periods of walking, standing, sitting, or working on a computer may be deemed necessary at any time
