The Associate Director of Facilities - Property, Grounds, and Life Support Systems will collaborate with our animal care division and oversee the team of Mechanical Systems Operators (MSOs) responsible for the maintenance and repairs of our aquatic life support systems. In addition, the Associate Director will be responsible for the daily operations of the security, custodial, and various contractors whose work ensures the Aquarium's public-facing space provides an optimal visitor experience. This position will work in collaboration with our Associate Director of Facilities - Maintenance and Repairs (AD - M&R), who oversees the licensed tradespeople responsible for repairs and maintenance throughout NEAq properties. The Associate Directors are expected to collaborate and share talent and resources to ensure the Aquarium's commitment to safety, animal welfare, asset protection, and an exceptional visitor experience are maintained. New England Aquarium has implemented comprehensive safety protocols for employees and visitors to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposure. As a member of our team, you will be provided with the training and resources needed to ensure a safe and rewarding experience. In addition, the Aquarium requires all staff to be vaccinated with one booster shot (when eligible) against COVID-19 unless a reasonable medical or religious accommodation is requested and approved. This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be five days a week, 8:00am - 4:00pm and will include one weekend day each week. Work must be conducted on-site. Applicants must be available for after-hours telephone consults as needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Lead the day-to-day operations of the teams of Mechanical Systems Operators (MSOs), the security contractor, and the custodial contractor. Manage the maintenance and upkeep schedule for the life support systems that support our animals; ensure that repairs are completed in an appropriate timeframe. Responsible for access and security on the main campus. Oversee security contractors and operate and maintain CCTV systems in collaboration with IT department. Ensure public spaces and grounds are clean, and safe for our visitors Liaise with the function and events contractor to provide Facilities support for on-campus events. Manage the contractors responsible for the erection, dismantling, and maintenance of tents in use on Aquarium grounds. Responsible for managing the snow removal contractor activities. Collaborate with the AD - M&R to ensure proper snow and ice mitigation is conducted, and that public spaces are safe for pedestrian traffic. Play a leadership role in responding to and recovering from emergencies within the incident command system. Schedule, coordinate, and supervise the work of outside contractors to ensure compliance with contract terms. Monitor and maintain budgets including the tracking of expenses and preparation of budget reports. Read and understand the collective bargaining agreement and manage to the requirements set forth within. Be knowledgeable about OSHA, state, AZA, and other safety standards and ensure ongoing compliance by employees and contractors on our property. LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS Lead by example demonstrating a high level of job performance including exemplary leadership, interpersonal, and communications skills. Conduct interviews, make hiring recommendations to the Director, and build high-performing work teams through hands-on management, training, and coaching. Hold employees accountable and work with the Director to manage performance. Set priorities, goals, and expectations. Empower employees and helps them to overcome barriers to their success. Recognize good performance and provide ongoing constructive feedback and coaching to employees on all shifts. Collaboratively conduct annual performance appraisals with the Director. Delegate appropriately and follow through to ensure the completion of team and individual responsibilities. Promote a culture of productivity, teamwork, and collaboration across the department and broader aquarium. Maintain a high level of job satisfaction and morale amongst employees on the team. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Training and Experience Bachelor's degree preferred A minimum of 5 years of experience in the Facilities Management field. Experience with life support equipment/systems or similar critical systems required. Strong project management experience and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously Experience leading high-performing work teams through hands-on management, training, and coaching. Demonstrated ability to build and promote a culture of productivity, teamwork, and collaboration across the department and in service to the broader organization Understanding of OSHA and other safety guidelines. Preferred Experience Experience maintaining, repairing, or operating pumps, water chillers, and heaters, filtration units, or other aquatic life support systems. Experience managing contractors and contract terms Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System preferred. Basic understanding of construction practices and terminology, as well as the ability to interpret for colleagues in other departments. Working knowledge of Green business practices.
