IDAHO CONSERVATION CORPS - 680 HR MINIDOKA NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE INTERNSHIP - JEROME, ID Interpretation, Education and Facilities Management Internship 17 Weeks: May 15, 2023 - September 9, 2023 Position Title: Interpretation, Education and Facilities Management Internship - 680 HR Position Summary: The National Park Service is recruiting summer interns at Minidoka National Historic Site (MIIN). The members will serve jointly with the Interpretation and Education division and the Facilities Management division. Minidoka National Historic Site is recruiting two Interpretation, Education and Facilities Management Interns beginning May through September 2023. The interns will conduct a variety of tasks associated with the use and management of park resources. The purpose of the position is to supplement the permanent park ranger workforce by performing duties designed to: (1) facilitate visitor understanding of park resources; (2) facilitate visitor enjoyment of the park and its resources; (3) facilitate visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and to gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of the park; (4) encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources; (5) support park staff in managing park resources. About Northwest Youth Corps (NYC): Northwest Youth Corps was created in 1984 to offer teenagers and young adults an education-based, work experience modeled after the historic Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. Today, we serve over 1,000 youth and young adults each year across a four-state region who restore critical habitat, build trails, lead volunteers, educate youth, and respond to local and national disasters. Minidoka National Historic Site - Jerome, ID During World War II, approximately 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were forcibly removed from their homes and incarcerated without due process of law. Although little remains of the barbed-wire fences and tar-papered barracks, the Minidoka concentration camp once held over 13,000 Japanese Americans in the Idaho desert. Established in 2001, Minidoka National Historic Site preserves their legacy and teaches the importance of civil liberties. More information at www.nps.gov/miin The Minidoka Relocation Center, also referred to as Hunt Camp, was occupied from August 1942 to October 1945. Operated by the War Relocation Authority (WRA), it encompassed 33,000 acres of land in Jerome County, with 950 acres dedicated to a residential area comprising more than 600 buildings. Minidoka had a peak population of 9,397 Japanese Americans from Washington State, Oregon, California, and Alaska; in total, more than 13,000 people were held in the incarceration camp. Approximately 1,000 people from Minidoka served in the US Army, mostly in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team which earned the distinction in the European Theater as the most highly decorated combat regiment in the entire war. Japanese Americans also played a critical role in helping Idaho's agricultural industries support the war effort by doubling their wartime production. Minidoka National Historic Site was officially designated the 385th unit of the National Park Service on January 17, 2001. Duties and Responsibilities : Major duties are related to learning and working alongside personnel in Interpretation and Education (80%) and Facilities Management (20%) divisions at Minidoka National Historic Site in Jerome, Idaho. The intern will communicate with the public about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII; staff the visitor center; maintain trails and facilities; and provide information about MIIN and the National Park Service including recreational opportunities and park regulations. Specific activities may include: Staffing visitor center front desk. Researching and preserving the natural and cultural resources of MIIN Roving trails, contacting visitors, and build skills to provide guided tours to visitors. Conducting routine site custodial and maintenance work. Required Qualifications: Ability to work outdoors, hike, and assist the public in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground. Ability to give direction and talk to the public. Good written and verbal communication skills. A positive attitude and cultural competency to interpret difficult and traumatic histories. Personal vehicle and driver's license to get to and from work. Ability to lift carry 30lbs. Desired Qualifications: Academic discipline or area of interest related to this position: history, education, humanities, Asian American studies, environmental science, or other similar field(s). Willingness to learn and participate in a team environment. Knowledge of US History or College level coursework in the humanities or English. Experience in presenting informational or educational talks to the public. Basic understanding of cleaning and grounds maintenance. Duty Location: Duties are performed at Minidoka National Historic Site in Jerome, Idaho. Interns will be required to make their own housing arrangements in the local southern Idaho area. Housing reimbursement may be available upon request. Terms of Employment : Each intern will complete the 17-week program starting mid-May through early-September 2023. The member will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays. The internship schedule will be Thursday through Monday (9a-5p). Friday, Saturday, and Sunday availability is a must . The intern will use computer programs such as word processing software to complete tasks. Laptop will not be provided. Personal transportation needed. Program Benefits : $9,520 total living allowance, prorated monthly. Members are responsible for providing their own food.
