Bethel University has an immediate opening for a Director of Intercultural Learning and Engagement. Reports to : The Vice President for Student Life on a daily basis but will be responsive to the President to periodically calibrate vision and planning campus wide. Role Identity : A leading campus thinker and voice on God's diverse design of humanity, and a champion for institutional progress in the areas of engaging all cultures. Culture-shaper for students, staff, faculty, administrators, and Trustees regarding Kingdom learning and thinking about intercultural engagement. Coordinate with all VPs to ensure we are serving ethnically diverse students, families, and churches in every aspect of their Bethel experience. General Duties : Continually express the intercultural learning and engagement agenda through the language of Bethel's mission statement and our existing institutional work values to "Love God, love people." Ongoing assessment of effectiveness of individual programs, annual assessment of the overall intercultural learning and engagement agenda, and practice of data-informed change. Support the Board of Trustees, Cabinet, and other Bethel's leaders in the institutional vision, rationale, and tactics to advance intercultural learning and engagement at Bethel. Participate ex-officio on employee recruiting processes to envision attracting and retaining more ethnically diverse employees to Bethel. Support HLC and all accreditation processes with program information and assessments on intercultural engagement work. Public presence in Chapel, Faculty meetings, and Staff meetings, campus events, etc. Report as requested to the President on work outcomes and campus plans. Specific Charges: LEAD: Manage and lead the Intercultural Learning and Engagement Advisory Council, involving Bethel employees and students; work with Student Development office support staff to assist with communications and calendar as helpful. LEAD: Manage and help lead the Billy Kirk Scholarship Program. LEAD: Lead campus cultural awareness and celebration events alongside the Council, Billy Kirk Scholars. ADMINISTRATE: Ensure campus clubs for students of color have effective leadership. IN COLLABORATION with the Council, Cabinet, and related departments: PLAN & DELIVER: Develop and execute a multi-year strategic plan for intercultural learning and engagement with concrete, referenceable initiatives. This plan should include three or four metrics for measuring institutional progress. TRAIN: Provide an annual professional development training agenda for all Bethel employees (alongside HR during staff orientation; alongside the VPAS for Faculty) with emphasis on the Biblical mandate for intercultural learning and engagement, institutional benchmarks of progress, personal skills, case studies, and other foci deemed appropriate. RECRUIT: Support recruitment of students of color - alongside Admission staff, envision, plan, and execute several recruitment events for under-represented students; oversee or assign the application and selection process of Billy Kirk Scholars; advise the Admissions team in growing the proportion of students of color enrollment at Bethel as envisioned in Bethel's strategic planning. RETAIN: Support retention - alongside Student Development and Student Success staff, encourage a sense of belonging on campus among students of color; manage the Racial Incidents Subcommittee as needed. Professional characteristics desired : A deep and well-articulated understanding of the biblical mandate to "love one another" as demonstrated through expressions of intercultural learning and engagement on a university campus. Graduate degree in relevant field. Demonstrated experience in leading targeted programs to success. Success in attracting support and managing across work units. Personal characteristics : Demonstrated maturity in the Christian faith (i.e. beyond a profession of faith, the capacity to disciple another). Knowledge of the Missionary Church, capacity to demonstrate institutional kinship with denominational constituents, doctrinal comfort with Wesleyan theology. However, denominational membership is not required. Assertive / self-starter Comfort in working independently Trustworthy / authentic Collaborative Professionalness in representing Bethel.
