Position: Cemetery Crew Leader Department: Parks and Recreation Hiring Range: $22.89 to $24.85 - based on qualifications/experience Wage Range: $22.89 to $30.90 Status: Non-Exempt - Full-Time Open Date: 04/05/23 Close Date: Open Until Position is Filled - First review of applications 04/24/23 POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Cemetery Sexton, the Cemetery Crew Leader performs as a crew lead in a variety of activities such as cemetery grounds maintenance, cemetery interments, open space, horticulture, facility maintenance, irrigation systems and urban forestry. The position provides input into department goals and objectives. ESSENTIAL DUTIES The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list, additional tasks may be assigned as needed . Coordinates weekly work schedule and makes daily work assignments as a Crew Leader to seasonal and part-time employees. Provides assistance and instruction to workers as needed to accomplish the work. Checks work in progress and, upon completion, ensures compliance with safety standards and quality requirements. Performs repair, improvements, maintenance as required for proper and efficient functioning and upkeep of City cemetery, public buildings, and properties. Operates all City-owned light and heavy equipment and hand tools required in the completion of various parks, cemetery, and public buildings and property projects. Performs routine maintenance of equipment and tools to ensure safe and efficient operation. Supports the cemetery sexton in establishing divisional work plans and monitors progress toward goals and objectives, in line with agency mission, vision and strategic plan. Supports the cemetery sexton in the preparation and management of asset replacement schedules, including vehicles and equipment. Works cooperatively with other areas of the department in providing maintenance support, including cemetery, parks, special events, and recreation programming. Provides customer service in a friendly manner and provide public with information related to various city services. Ensures efforts in sustainable practices throughout the cemetery division. Participates in department commitment to safe practices for the public and employees. Ensures departmental compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, OSHA laws, risk management policies and emergency operations. Performs other duties as assigned. MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES May supervise seasonal employees. Carries out crew leader responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; providing feedback and coaching. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school and one year of park or cemetery operations experience. One year of supervisory experience is preferred. Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Applicator Pesticide Spray License or ability to obtain is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Skill in the implementation of maintenance standards. Knowledge of turf management, forestry, and horticultural practices. Knowledge of cemetery maintenance practices. Knowledge of sustainable practices, including integrated pest management approaches. Familiarity with cemetery processes and records. Skill in planning, assigning and directing work. Assists in evaluating the performance of seasonal staff and takes corrective action, when necessary. Assists in creating an effective working environment for seasonal staff including ongoing communication, continuously improving processes to streamline work activities, provide continuous feedback and coaching to staff, and provide staff with opportunities for engagement. Basic computer knowledge and understanding of business applications of various technological tools and systems, including Microsoft Office. Skill in communicating with the public and staff. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License, CDL license may be required. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and may, on occasion, operate equipment or machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office or moderately noisy when in the field. May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings and evenings. May be required to work in inclement weather conditions on occasion.
