The Director of Nursing Services (DNS) plans, organizes, develops, and directs the overall operations of nursing services in accordance with local, state, and federal standards and regulations, as well as established facility policies and procedures at Friendship Health Center, a skilled nursing and long-term care facility. The DNS infuses collaboration, respect, and passion for helping others by leading Friendship Health Center's nursing team through a shared vision and purpose. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Drive business excellence, staff excellence, clinical excellence, and customer excellence Provide inspirational and servant leadership, direction, and administration of day-to-day patient care operations Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the overall operations of the Nursing Services department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current state and federal laws and regulations Communicate a shared vision for clinical excellence; ensures the realization of high-quality and cost-effective healthcare Be a champion of positivity and high morale Serve as a liaison between nursing staff, doctors, and healthcare administrators Create standard-of-care guidelines Develop short- and long-term goals for the department such as staffing, procedural, and standard-of-care goals Supervise monitoring and recording of expenses Evaluate nursing department performance Make recommendations to the Administrator, as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the nursing service department Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies Assist in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies Interprets and communicates policies and procedures to nursing staff and monitors staff practices and implementation Participate in admission decisions Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings to discuss census changes, resident changes in status, complaints, or concerns Participate in QAPI or facility assessment activities as needed, such as carrying out duties assigned as part of a performance improvement committee Facilitate, serve, attend, or participate in various committees of the facility as appointed Oversee and collaborate with Infection Preventionist to implement changes to infection prevention procedures Interview, hire, and train new nursing staff Evaluate the work performance of all nursing personnel and implements discipline according to operational policies Ensure delivery of compassionate quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate staff coverage on the units, general cleanliness, and maintaining optimal resident functions Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team, physicians, consultants, and community agencies to identify and resolve issues and improve the quality of services Communicate directly with residents, medical and nursing staff, family members, department heads and members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care and services and respond to and resolve complaints and concerns Oversee resident incidents and concerns daily to identify any unusual occurrences and reports them promptly to the Administrator and/or state agency for appropriate action Monitor for allegations of potential abuse or neglect, or misappropriation of resident property and participates in the investigative process Promote safe work practices, safety rules, and accident prevention procedures to prevent employee injury and illness May provide direct nursing care as necessary QUALIFICATIONS A Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university Must have, as a minimum, two (2) years of experience working as a Director of Nursing in a skilled nursing facility Current unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Oregon Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to skilled nursing and long-term care Current CPR certification PERSONAL SKILLS AND TRAITS DESIRED/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public Must possess leadership, supervisory ability, and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel Must be able to follow oral and written instructions Must have patience, tact, and willingness to deal with difficult residents, family, and staff Must be able to relay information concerning a resident's condition Must not pose a threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position Meet general health requirements according to facility policy, including medical and physical exams and checking immunity status to various infectious diseases Ability to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations Ability to push/pull, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform overhead lifting and other common physical movements as needed for the position Able to communicate with medical and nursing staff, and other departments WORKING CONDITIONS Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions Job tasks may be performed in close physical proximity to other people Subject to call-back during emergency conditions Subject to injury from falls, burns, odors, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminants Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc. May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals Works in the office and throughout the facility Subject to frequent interruptions Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends, and holidays when necessary. On-call 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
