**Potential to hire a Backhoe Operator I or II dependent on qualifications. Backhoe Operator I Job description statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this job title; not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required; and subject to change, as approved by the City Manager. Job Summary: Employees in this class are under general Supervision. Majority of work performed in operating a backhoe.Examples of work performed: excavates leaking water lines, excavates around underground utilities including gas, water, electric, cable TV, phone, etc.; opening ditches for new water and sewer line installations; must be able to make substantial progress while opening trenches and digging around other utilities; maintains and performs appropriate repair work on equipment; assists in the repair and installation of water and sewer lines, meters, etc., when not operating the backhoe; performs related work as required.Backhoe operators, at this level, perform work requiring specialized skill in the operation of a backhoe. This level of skill shall be sufficient to enable the employee to open trenches to grade and excavate around existing utilities with minimal guidance. Required Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of and experience with a backhoe obtained through extensive hands-on operation within the department or during other job experienceKnowledge of state and city traffic regulationsKnowledge of safety precautions and occupational hazardsKnowledge of backhoe maintenanceKnowledge of materials and equipment used in general utility maintenance workAbility to respond in emergency call-out situationsAbility to understand and follow oral and written instructionsAbility to successfully complete utility projects such as leak repairs, installation of new water and sewer mains, and water meters with minimal guidanceAbility to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees Qualifications: High school education or equivalent is preferred. Experience required in backhoe operation. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license and possess a Commercial Driver's License or be able to obtain same within six (6) months of employment. Essential Functions: Some heavy lifting up to I 00 pounds occasionally and pushing required. Subjected to extended periods of physical exertion while shoveling and digging. Excellent hand-eye coordination required especially when operating equipment in and around construction on rights-of-way and in tight situations. Exposed to all weather conditions (hot, cold and muddy), and loud noises. Subject to call-out. The City of Cookeville is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
