The System Safety Engineer will support the Safety & Mission Assurance services contract at NASA MSFC supporting the NASA Liquid Engines Office of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program. RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist the NASA customer in assessing acceptability of various safety analysis products associated with liquid rocket engine design and operations. Applied knowledge of primary and secondary structures, heat exchangers, combustion chambers, gimbal joints, flexible elements, insulation, and pressurized cryogenic fluid systems is necessary. Develop and present results of system safety assessments and related documents to the Liquid Engines Office and Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Directorate management during development milestones reviews, Table-Top Safety Reviews (TTSR's), and other technical and SMA reviews in support of flight readiness and certification. Provide insight/oversight of Prime Contractor Design, Development, Test, and Evaluation (DDT&E) activities and coordinate Table-Top Safety Reviews (TTSR's) for contractor developed system safety analysis products. Assess acceptability of Contractor-developed System Safety Program Plans (SSPP) and hazard analyses to assure that: (a) all hazards are identified, and the associated risks properly characterized; (b) hazard controls satisfy safety requirements and mitigate safety risks; (c) safety verification requirements are clearly identified, including the clear definition of verification pass/fail criteria; and (d) the safety verification status is maintained in a closed loop accounting system. Assess SLS Program and/or Liquid Engine Office documentation (e.g., Contractor PWS, Data Requirements Documents, System Requirements Document, Contract End Item, Requirements Verification Compliance procedures) to assure that all safety requirements are addressed in compliance with Government requirements. Confirm/validate successful closure of hazard control verifications. Further, develop and present operational hazard control verification evidence to the Element Safety Verification Board. Assess proposed changes to SLS Program and Liquid Engine Office documentation to assure compliance with safety requirements. This assessment includes evaluation of the impacts to safety and hazard analyses and the effects on program or project risk. Evaluate and provide recommendations for acceptance of Non-compliance Reports, and Requests for Waiver/Deviations. Track to closure all Safety Data Package (SDP) review comments, Table Top Safety Review (TTSR)Action Items and Agreements. Track and/or monitor the implementation and validation of hazard controls in accordance with approved hazard reports and verification plans. Develop and present status reports to upper management during various program management reviews such as Certificate of Flight Readiness Review (COFR), Stage Operations Readiness Review (SORR), and Flight Readiness Review (FRR). Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED: This position has been posted at multiple levels. This position requires US Citizenship due to the sensitivity of customer related information. Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering, or a related field. Must have 5+ years of recent and related (liquid rocket engine propulsion) work experience. Must possess demonstrable experience in the identification and documentation of hazards, hazard controls, and proposing methods of verification/validation. Further, extensive experience in the performance of Fault Tree Analysis, Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and/or similar types of system safety engineering analysis. Prior experience in the use of System Safety software analysis tools such as CAFTA, Saphire, or similar software analysis tools. Proficient in the challenges, technologies and historical system solutions endemic to the space environment and have knowledge in several subject areas such as propulsion, fluids, avionics, thermal management, mechanisms, and control systems. DESIRED: Skilled in working with both contractor and NASA senior level engineering and Program/Project Managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex safety and engineering issues in an understandable and diplomatic manner. Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes and procedures is highly desired. WORK LOCATION: This position offers a hybrid work schedule; some hours will be remote, and some hours will be in the office. The onsite office is located onsite at Marshall Spaceflight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville Alabama. This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off. STANDARD BASTION REQUIREMENTS: Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite. All of Bastion's employees must be team players. Able to communicate effectively with internal and external customers. Able to follow company programs, processes, procedures, practices, requirements, goals, and objectives. Must have a strong work ethic and must be safety culture oriented. Must be organized with good time management skills. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task. Will work with, and around, standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.). Professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time). ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED: All Bastion employees must be able to pass a national agency check, some positions require a clearance and will require an extensive background verification/check process.
