WHO YOU ARE: A passionate mentor/leader in the news and media industry. One that is hungry for information, is able to stay organized with multiple initiatives going on and communicates effectively, both verbally and written with employees at all levels of an organization and with varying backgrounds/experiences. You're creative and always thinking of fresh ideas for generating public attention to news stories. You have the ability to pivot and cover breaking news stories as they arise in order to remain relevant to the audience. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING: The Assistant News Editor collaborates with the News Director, Deputy News Director, and the Director of Digital Content Director to deliver the daily content plan. As Assistant News Editor, you'll supervise a team of reporters, assign and edit news stories for the digital and audio platforms. You'll have responsibility for managing day-to-day production of both audio and digital news stories and ensuring timely delivery of them. In addition, you'll provide mentorship to reporters who have varying levels of experience and will work closely with other newsroom leaders to streamline workflow, develop newsgathering and audience strategies, and foster an ambitious, inclusive work culture. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Assign stories and work with other editors to implement a consistent, reliable multi-platform content plan. Work with reporters and edit their stories for the website and public radio station, 91.3 WLVR. Manage the handoff in the afternoon and guide the evening news plan accordingly. Manage the daily and weekly news workflow while planning ahead and shepherding long-term projects with the reporters you supervise. Use sharp news judgment in directing reporters and shaping story ideas, quickly turning breaking news when needed. Edit content to ensure accuracy and quality. Collaborate across departments, bring ideas, help to build audience and engagement, and work toward improving the overall operation. You'll cultivate a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment that supports the organization's values and strategic plan. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE HAS: Bachelor's degree preferably in journalism, English, communications or equivalent. A demonstrated record as a reporter with a versatile skill set and the temperament to lead. Experience as an editor, supervisor, or manager in a newsroom environment. High journalistic standards and news judgment. A welcoming can-do attitude to working in a creative, demanding, competitive environment. Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytic and organizational skills. Versatile, adaptable and steady under pressure. Able to work an off-shift for 4 days during the week and one day each weekend. A valid driver's license and a good driving record (as determined by a background check.) For the radio newscast Assistant News Editor position: Must have experience producing and editing audio stories for newscasts, preferably in public radio. ABOUT OUR CLIENT: Our client is a growing public media company with a television station and an NPR radio station that has recently launched a newsroom and new digital news platform. They're in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania - a news-rich community whose traditional media have been battered and shrunken by layoffs and corporate ownership. Their mission: Reinvigorate our community with journalism that informs and enlightens - and beat back the shadows of a looming news desert. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Initial compensation range: $55-$63k with ability to receive annual merit increase based on performance.
