Our city is growing, and we are currently hiring for a Wastewater Operator to join our talented team of operators in the Public Works department. This individual would become part of a dynamic, engaging team that values the contributions made by its employees and encourages professional development. This position will be responsible for operating equipment to assist in the operations, maintenance, and repair of the City's wastewater infrastructure. The role will also allow for an individual to start at a Wastewater Operator I, II, or III depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time and benefitted position located in the City of Box Elder. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with an option for a four day 10-hour shift schedule and three days off. Please read on to find out more about this position and how to apply. MAJOR DUTIES: Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater system components. Assists in the collection of water samples. Performs visual checks of facilities for equipment malfunctions and assists in repairing or correcting malfunctions. Maintains records and logs. Collects and records additional performance information. Assists in locating underground utilities. Performs building maintenance and janitorial duties. This position will also include the following duties: building maintenance, assisting with traffic safety devices and controlling traffic at work sites, responding to after-hours emergencies, assisting will special city events, and may assist with snow removal operations. ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Required Knowledge: Principles and practices of modern wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance. Principles and practices of the physical, biological, and chemical characteristics of wastewater treatment including microbiological and bacteriological analyses. Federal, state and local requirements and regulations pertaining to wastewater treatment. Standard traffic laws and ordinances, safety regulations, principles, practices, material safety data sheets (MSDS) and equipment related to the work. Tools and equipment used in the trade. Required Skills: Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools related to the work. Making accurate arithmetic calculations. Reading and interpreting plans, maps and instructions. Understanding and following oral and written directions. Preparing basic records and reports of work performed. Operation of a wide variety of light and heavy motorized equipment. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Performing general maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew, in various areas, depending upon the function. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma/GED; AND one (1) year of maintenance/construction experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience . South Dakota Class I operator's certification in Water Distribution or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of date of hire. South Dakota Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) within eighteen (18) months of date of hire. Conditions of Employment : A candidate receiving a conditional offer of employment will undergo a background investigation and drug screening. Employees will be enrolled in the South Dakota Retirement System.
