Veteran Affairs – Student Outreach Coordinator

Linfield University is recruiting to fill an opening for a Veteran Affairs - Student Outreach Coordinator to join the Student Affairs Team. The Veteran Affairs/Student Outreach Coordinator will serve as the School Certifying Official (SCO). The SCO is a representative of an educational institute or training establishment who is authorized to submit enrollment certification to DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs) for VA education benefits. The SCO acts as the primary School Certifying Official for the institution and serves as the main contact for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the State Approval Agency for audits, catalog reviews, and site visits, and as the Education Liaison Representative for the University. The coordinator will also work with the Director of Student Care and Support to outreach to students who are struggling academically, socially or with their mental or physical health and connect them to resources on campus to help with their success. Review of applications will begin immediately and will remain open until filled. Work Schedule : This is a 1.0 FTE position, working full-time Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Keep VA informed of the enrollment status of students receiving VA education benefits. Ensure that only those courses that apply to the student's program are certified. Monitor student grades to ensure the student is making satisfactory progress, and report probation and termination as needed. Monitor student conduct and report when student is suspended or dismissed for unsatisfactory conduct. Notify the State Approving Agency (SAA) of any substantive program, policy, and approval criteria changes. Notify the VA Education Liaison Representative (ELR) of any changes to SCO staff. The SCO is also the primary liaison for Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) and should be familiar with the Tungsten system. The SCO develops resources and educational initiatives sessions for veteran's, active-duty military and their families to ensure awareness of all of the various resources available to support education success. Attend University Care Team Meetings. Reach out to students as needed to provide support and resources for students who are struggling. Create support network for veteran students. Work with Student Care and Support Office to create early intervention programs to help students succeed at Linfield. Support University-wide retention efforts, focusing specifically on assessment of Student Care Referrals. Monitor and follow-up with student concerns, and serve as a student advocate. Keep up-to-date on state and federal regulations and benefits: Read and maintain VA advisories and bulletins. Keep up-to-date on state regulations and state education benefits for veterans and eligible persons. Attend training opportunities opportunities. Assist students receiving VA education benefits in: Applying for state and VA education benefits. Identifying applicable resources for student success. Inquiring about payment and benefit problems. Ensuring that VA students are aware of their responsibility to the school. Understanding how progress, conduct, registration, and attendance can impact benefits and cause student debt. Serving as the primary liaison for the Yellow Ribbon Program and Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31), and invoicing using the Tungsten system. Minimum Qualifications: Education College degree required. Experience and Knowledge Three years of training and experience in veteran or student support. Adept in written and oral communication. Knowledge of basic computer skills. Ability to represent the University within the local community. Possess a valid driver's license and driving record to become/remain certified to operate Linfield vehicles and equipment. Assist in transporting small groups in urban. Must be flexible with the seasonal demands and cyclical nature of the job. Preferred Qualifications: Military training or Veteran Status desirable. Three years of training and experience in veteran or student support in a university environment.
