Viterbo University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Technical Director with strong carpentry and scenic construction skills to join our talented production team in the Conservatory for the Performing Arts. In this 12-month salaried role, you will work on a range of projects including theatrical productions, music concerts and recitals, touring shows, and university sponsored events presented in our Fine Arts Center and at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts in downtown La Crosse. The Assistant Technical Director reports to the Conservatory Production Manager and works collaboratively with the faculty Technical Director in the Theatre and Music Theatre Department. Together this team works to support the areas of scenery, lighting, props, sound, and special effects. The ideal candidate has experience with contemporary hands-on scenic construction techniques including carpentry and metalworking. Some experience in the areas of lighting, sound, and video practices is a plus. Experience working with students in an educational setting is highly desirable. The successful candidate demonstrates patience, time management, attention to detail and great interpersonal and organizational skills. They will also demonstrate the ability to think on their feet, learn from mistakes, and make effective recommendations. This is a fulltime position eligible for all employee benefits. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Construct and install scenery for Conservatory productions. Provide technical support for Fine Arts Center events including touring productions, music concerts, and university sponsored events as assigned. Assist with CAD renderings of construction drawings for the scene shop. Assist in developing build calendars for each Conservatory production. Assist in the preparation of material and labor budgets. Assist with ordering of materials and supplies as requested. Assist with the training and supervision of student crews. Assist with load-In and strike for all shows as assigned. Attend technical rehearsals as requested. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Be familiar with emergency evacuation plans and execute if needed. Operate, maintain, and supervise scene shop equipment, lighting, sound, and other stage resources; and recommend maintenance and/or replacement when needed. Contribute to the overall success of the Conservatory production and the Fine Arts Center presenting seasons by performing all other duties as assigned. General Requirements / Qualifications Bachelor's degree in technical theatre and/or an equivalent combination of education and professional technical theatre experience. MFA in theatre production is a plus. 2 years of technical theatre experience preferred. Strong carpentry and construction skills. Strong communication and organizational skills. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Proficiency with computer-aided drafting. AutoCAD and VectorWorks preferred. Knowledge of current safety protocols and practices Ability to follow instructions and remain professional under pressure. Demonstrate collegiality and an ability to build strong working relationships with students, colleagues, guest artists, and the public. Must be authorized to work in the United States. Use hands to handle, feel, and talk or hear. Reach with hands and arms. Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75-100 pounds.
