The Assistant Lumberyard Manager Trainee (AMT) for American Hardwood Industries, Waynesboro, VA will learn the entire value stream and supporting administrative systems. If not a Certified Hardwood Lumber Inspector, the successful candidate will be required to learn to grade lumber (including on and off-site training and coursework). For a period of not less than twelve months, the position will focus as a supervisor role on lumber receiving, stacking, and grading to include all operational performance, safety and quality control duties. The AMT will be a manager and leader within the organization initially with responsibility for up to 10 direct reports. The position reports to the Lumber Yard Manager. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Strictly adhere to and enforce safety policies and procedures Interact with administrative systems to ensure accurate inventory control Evaluate and understand incoming lumber quality in the context of company standards Communicate regularly with purchasing managers regarding lumber quality, grade and vendor performance Assign proper grade to incoming lumber Maintain acceptable performance on key metrics (efficiency, uptime, productivity) Interact with peers, direct reports and superiors respectfully toward common objectives Requirements Supervisor experience (at least five direct reports) Lumber grading experience preferred Forklift operator experience preferred Comfortable working in a dynamic environment Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs. Basic computer skills (data entry, databases, spreadsheets) Ability to learn processes, procedures and systems for the full lumber value stream The ideal candidate will enjoy working as a team member in an intensive learning environment. The role will include a developmental timeline aimed at promotability within the AHI system.
