A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL (DSP) As a Direct Support Professional (DSP) with our human services nonprofit, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of individuals with varying levels of abilities. You start your day by arriving at your assigned location, ready to provide direct supervision to individuals in accordance with their treatment plan. You demonstrate your competencies in task analysis, life plan/staff action plan, goal implementation, job coaching/teaching, report writing, and behavioral interventions, in both NH and NY Programs. When you interact with the individuals, you facilitate their independence in community/centered-based activities, job tasks, or residential activities. You also help develop appropriate social skills and encourage the establishment of social relationships. Your expertise as a DSP helps you develop and coordinate schedules, which reflect integrated opportunities for individuals with disabilities. These activities are geared toward increasing independence, community access, and awareness. In this caregiver position, you assist in the development and revision of training plans, Life Plan/Staff Action objectives, and fading plans in NH and NY Programs. While in this homecare role, you work on implementing approved training and fading plans, Life Plan/Staff Action objectives, and behavior plans. You observe behavior, skill levels, areas of interest, etc., to provide objective information and formulate data-based recommendations. Assuring quality control standards in accordance with employer and volunteer expectations as applicable, you provide positive role modeling for individuals. You maintain documentation and prepare reports as required according to approved formats and designated timelines, including authorization for dispensing medication as applicable. On our habilitation team, you also transport individuals to and from program activities and appointments in your personal vehicle and/or agency van. You provide training in related skills, such as self-care skills, money management, cooking, social interactions, transportation systems, etc., as approved by the treatment team. While working as a caregiver, you are well equipped to provide services to individuals with varied behavior issues, which may include physical aggression, verbal assault, inappropriate sexual comments, gestures, and/or acts. You assist individuals who have disabilities with their personal care needs when necessary. Using your great communication skills, you communicate pertinent information with the team and support system to allow the individual to receive the maximum benefit from the services offered. As a DSP, you demonstrate appropriate judgment and understanding of client safety while supporting individuals. Throughout the day, you follow through with supervisory requests and seek supervision when unclear about expectations. You also perform and assist with routine household tasks, including meal preparation, housekeeping, and outdoor maintenance as applicable. At the end of your day, you reflect on your accomplishments and participate in available training opportunities geared toward expanding your knowledge of treatment methods. You understand that 20 hours of training are required per year. You follow all policies and procedures as outlined by the department and agency, and you perform additional duties as requested to fulfill our human services nonprofit's mission. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL (DSP) High school diploma or equivalent 2 years work experience preferred Ability to become medication certified (AMAP) and successfully complete Easterseals NY Rochester required training and obtaining the associated certificates Valid driver's license We are looking for a Direct Support Professional with flexible scheduling abilities.
