Drosophila population genetics of insecticide resistance Undergraduate Research Assistant Faculty Mentor: Dmitri Petrov, Department of Biology Project Description: The Petrov Lab at Stanford University studies the genetic and molecular basis of adaptation and evolutionary change in a variety of model systems, including Drosophila. The lab is currently seeking one undergraduate research assistant to help with a research project investigating trade-offs associated with the evolution of insecticide resistance in Drosophila populations. The undergraduate research assistant will help in the analysis of phenotypes (e.g., insecticide resistance, fecundity, developmental time) in Drosophila populations seasonally evolving in the presence and absence of pesticides. The project duties will consist of: · Preparation of Drosophila media · Maintenance of Drosophila cultures · Phenotypic measurements in evolving Drosophila populations · Data entry and management Students can expect opportunities for professional development from this research experience. This is a great opportunity for students without prior laboratory experience. All research will take place on Stanford Main Campus in the Bass Biology Building. Qualifications: No prior experience working in a laboratory is necessary; all training will be included in the position. A positive attitude, enthusiasm to learn, and attention to detail are the most important qualities in potential applicants. Training and supervision of the undergraduate research assistant will be provided primarily by a postdoc researcher leading the project. The student will also have access to all lab activities, including weekly meetings and interactions with lab’s PI and other members. Requirements: Applicants should be available for the entire duration of the project from early September to end of mid December 2021 with flexible start/end dates. The student should expect to devote 15-20 hours per week to the project. Scheduling can be flexible based on students’ needs. Students must be eligible for Federal Work Study. Support: Eligible students will receive financial support via Federal Work Study.
