Position summary We are seeking a temporary, part time Upper School Computer Science teacher as a maternity leave substitute, starting in September 2019 through mid-February of 2020. Within this general time frame, the exact dates of this position are somewhat negotiable depending on the availability of the applicant.This position would be responsible for teaching 2 sections of our Introduction to Machine Learning elective, which is a mixed-grade course for students with an intermediate level of programming expertise.We are looking for applicants with clear background in the field of machine learning and demonstrated interest in working with young people in a rich, cross-disciplinary, project­-based learning environment. While the ideal candidate will have prior background teaching at the K-12 and/or university level, we are also open to considering applicants without background in formal K-12 education who have other background teaching, coaching, and/or mentoring young people in other settings.Nueva is committed to implementing a broad, holistic, and modern computer science program that teaches concepts through a variety of projects, programming languages, libraries, and methodologies. Our aim is for students to view coding as a creative, expressive medium, to understand the diverse ways computer science can be applied in varying contexts, and ultimately, to see computer science as another tool to effect change in the world. The ideal candidate will have interest and background in a variety of modes of teaching and be highly skilled at differentiating instruction to meet the needs of a variety of students.As with all classes in our I-Lab program, our Computer Science classes are built upon the pedagogical foundation of experiential learning. As such, you must be highly flexible, agile, and excited by the possibility of leveraging student interests, picking up new technologies, and learning alongside students to create authentic and meaningful learning experiences. Recent elective offerings in Computer Science that have been offered in response to both faculty and student interests have included "Exploring Cryptocurrency", "Code and Art", "Coding for the Community", "Functional Programming", "Introduction to Machine Learning", "Mobile App Development", and "Computer Security". The General Responsibilities for this Computer Science Teacher position are to ... Collaborate with, learn from, and be mentored by our current Machine Learning teacher (who is going on maternity leave) during the 1st half of the semester to develop and teach these courses expertly in a differentiated and student-centered classroom Assume responsibility for this course and continue guiding students through the curriculum once our current teacher goes on leave, with opportunity for continuing mentorship by the I-Lab Director and the rest of the I-Lab team Convey enthusiasm for intellectual inquiry and model lifelong learning Partner with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to promote learning in all students Work with the rest of the I-Lab team to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in the I-Lab and guide students in safe and responsible use of technology Model flexibility in implementing school-wide practices such as standards-based grading Provide timely feedback to students and parents in the forms of assessments, quarterly written narrative feedback, and student-parent-teacher conferences Lead by example in your commitment to Nueva's mission: "Our school community inspires passion for lifelong learning, fosters social and emotional acuity, and develops the student's imaginative mind." Other duties as assigned You would enjoy this role if you have: Interest in high-school computer science education Enthusiasm for learning new technologies quickly and designing curriculum accordingly in order to respond to emergent student interests Desire to learn by doing and to learn with/from others, including students and adults Flexibility and creativity in working in a dynamic environment where new ideas, mistakes, and iteration are embraced. Openness to feedback and improvement, modeling lifelong learning of practice as well as subject area. We are looking for someone with some subset of the following: Fluency in Python OR willingness to learn Python plus demonstrated fluency in at least 1 modern and educationally-relevant programming language (e.g. Java, C, C++, JavaScript, Haskell, Lisp, Ruby, R, Swift) and/or related platforms such as Processing, P5.js, Arduino, etc. Background with general data analysis concepts like classification, clustering, and regression as well as specific machine learning techniques such as random forests and neural networks Expertise to explain complex topics succinctly, simply, in a compelling manner, and in varied ways to reach both less-experienced and more-experienced students Expertise to connect computer science concepts and skills to student interests and other academic disciplines Background working with young people in different age groups Expertise to communicate effectively and professionally with a variety of audiences, including students, parents, and colleagues, both in person and in writing Deep interest and willingness to learn and grow in any of the above areas, especially those that are not currently familiar to you Bachelor's degree, or higher, in computer science or a related position and/or industry background in software development To Apply Please visit to submit a introductory letter, résumé, and contact info for at least 3 professional references to your application for the position.
