Job Overview The SQL DBA and Billing Analyst will have two related functions, as follows: For the DBA function, this role serves to assure the availability, efficient operation, security, and consistent performance of the company’s various Structured Query Language (SQL) applications and relational databases, particularly those that support revenue, billing, and financial reporting-related structured data. The ideal candidate will have significant prior experience managing relational databases, optimizing performance, monitoring system health, and ensuring data security and integrity in SQL environments. For the billing function, this role serves as the bridge between raw data, transaction-processing, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to analyze data and optimize processes to ensure proper customer invoicing. Job Impact This role is critical to assuring the completeness, accuracy, validity, and timeliness of the company’s billing and revenue recognition processes, which ultimately supports the company’s ability to make business decisions, ensure its financial health, and provide necessary information to internal and external stakeholders. SQL Database Administrator (DBA) functions Database Design and Implementation: Collaborate with developers and stakeholders to design and create database schemas, tables, and indexes. Confirm relational data among entities and variables. Implement best practices for data modeling, normalization, and indexing. Validate automated data feeds into the database. Ensure database outputs are complete, accurate, and meet user needs. Ensure accuracy of calculations performed within the SQL database. Database Maintenance: Perform regular backups, restores, and disaster recovery procedures. Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize queries. Apply patches, updates, and security fixes to database software. Maintain server health and performance via code optimization and automation of routine maintenance tasks. Security and Access Control: Set up user accounts, roles, and permissions. Ensure data security by implementing access controls, encryption, and authentication mechanisms. Monitor and audit user activity to prevent unauthorized access. Performance Tuning and Optimization: Analyze query execution plans and optimize slow-running queries. Fine-tune database parameters for optimal performance. Implement caching strategies and indexing techniques. Continuously evaluate processes to identify opportunities for improvement through enhancement of existing processes/tools, or increased automation. Troubleshooting and Support: Design and develop reporting tools that (a) enable automation of recurring reports for internal and external (e.g., customer) use, and (b) allow cross-functional users (primarily finance, accounting, customer success, and sales) to easily generate custom reporting. Investigate and resolve database-related issues, such as data corruption, connectivity problems, and performance degradation. Provide technical support to application developers and end-users. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business objectives, particularly in support of Marchex financial reporting and financial planning and analysis (FP&A) functions. Capacity Planning and Scalability: Estimate future database growth and plan for scalability. Optimize resource utilization to accommodate increasing data volumes. Backup and Recovery: Develop backup and recovery strategies. Test backup procedures and ensure data integrity. Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation related to database configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps. Ensure mapping tables and stored procedures are accurate and up to date. Billing Analyst functions Process Improvement: Drive continuous process improvement within the billing function, including identifying areas for improvement and implementing process changes – this role must lead the company’s billing systems transformation project, as Marchex is migrating from 4+ separate billing systems to one system that is fully integrated into a new ERP tool. Invoice Issuance: Input customer contractual terms required to assure accurate invoicing into billing systems. Process, post, and distribute accurate invoices to clients promptly and with precision. Accounts Receivable Record Maintenance: As needed, assist with invoice cash application and reconciliation of accounts receivable subsidiary ledgers. Collaboration and Support: Work closely with various teams to ensure billing accuracy. Assist in monthly and quarterly audits. Address client inquiries related to billing. Investigate and rectify any billing-related discrepancies or errors. Analysis and Reporting: Format complex financial information into clear, concise reports. Examine billing trends, identify patterns, and make predictions. Present insights on billing activities and revenue forecasts. Present findings to company management, ensuring that non-technical stakeholders can understand and act upon the data. Experience, Skills and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, accounting, finance, or related fields. Minimum 4 years of SQL DBA work experience. Highly proficient in Structured Query Language (SQL) and experience with relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or Oracle. Comfortable working with large datasets; knowledge of database design principles, normalization, and indexing. Familiarity with backup and recovery procedures. Highly effective in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with other electronic billing systems and processes, preferably Microsoft Great Plains and/or Microsoft Business Central. Experience in accounting/US GAAP, financial reporting, and/or order-to-cash processes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently. Is an independent, detail-oriented performer and delivers accurate work products with minimal oversight and need for correction. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to convey insights effectively. Possesses personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to corporate mission. Capable of making complex decisions under schedule and performance pressure and drives to execute tasks in a timely manner. Has a high degree of emotional intelligence and maturity as demonstrated by interaction with individuals and organizations. Able to effectively collaborate and understand the needs of cross-functional stakeholders, to include members of finance and accounting, sales, customer success, and executive leadership teams. Desired certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) AWS Certified Database – Specialty Working Conditions The job conditions for this position are in a standard office setting and may be fully or partially remote. Employees in this position use PC and phone on an on-going basis throughout the day. Limited corporate travel may be required to remote offices or other business meetings and events.
