About the camp Camp Pennyroyal is a traditional overnight summer camp owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Located 15 miles south of Owensboro, KY, this 180-acre camp includes an 8-acre lake, three year-round buildings, platform tents, screened cabins, and primitive camping areas. Pennyroyal is a variety of traditional camp activities including canoeing, kayaking, standup paddle boarding as well as archery and a low/ high ropes course. Our program hosts Girl Scouts entering grades 4 through 12 with up to 70 campers per session. Programs are run by paid camp staff and Girl Scout volunteers. About the role The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is looking for a full-time Program Director will help ensure the ultimate summer camp experience for our campers. The Program Director ensures the physical and mental well-being of all campers and develops daily programming for small and large groups. The Program Director will supervise staff in the program areas, assist in training staff, and support all program needs around the camp. Other duties include overseeing high/low ropes courses, participating in daily aquatic activities, supporting cookouts, managing campfire programs, participating in daily camp life, and more. The Program Director should be responsible, attentive, and fun-loving. They will be invested in developing a camp culture that nourishes the health and growth of campers, staff, and volunteers. Compensation The salary for the Program Director (Camp Pennyroyal) position is $5,250 for the entire seasonal contract. Staff training will be held May 27 - June 6, with additional training and set-up time for some staff from May 23 - May 25. Key Responsibilities ● Responsible for overall safety of campers and staff using general program and low/high ropes equipment. ● Train and supervise Unit staff in program areas that do not require certifications. ● Coach a variety of instructional sessions which include but are not limited to high ropes safety, and other rescue drills/ safety practice for staff. ● Perform routine checks of equipment, facilities, and programs and work with the Camp Director and Site Manager to communicate maintenance needs. ● Learn and allow time for camp traditions and maintaining a high level of camp spirit. ● Work with the Director team to create daily schedule of camper programming to be shared with staff. ● Participate as a member of the Director Team to support others when needed and act as Camp Director when Director and Assistant Director are unavailable. ● Ensure all program guide promises are met through programming and we are meeting the goals of camp and outcomes for campers. ● Other duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT ● Non-traditional and long work hours are expected.● The Program Director may be asked to sleep in a unit with other staff members separate (but near) campers with restrooms a short walk away.● Daily exposure to various weather conditions, plants, and animals.● Walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain. Camp Pennyroyal hosts low and high ropes courses.● Daily swimming, boating, and life guarding on Wishing Star Lake. MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION ● Must be First Aid/CPR Certified ● Waterfront Lifeguard certification preferred (but not required prior to start of camp) ● Any program instruction certification preferred ● Other certifications and crafts, outdoor, or high ropes skills/knowledge are a plus EXPERIENCE ● 21+ years of age ● Meet state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment ● Strong communication, written, and public speaking skills ● Possess solid time management skills when planning and implementing creative programming ● Adaptable and flexible within a fast-paced working environment ● Organized and consistent ● Provide exemplary customer service ● Able to pull up to an overview of the entire goal and problem solve accordingly ● Comfort and competency while driving automatic vehicles ● Must have valid driver's license with a safe driving record meeting company standards ● Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions POSITION COMPETENCIES ● Help the development of good morale and well-being among the camp. ● Access to reliable transportation. ● Valid driver's license and proof of insurance. ● Must completed and be certified in American Red Cross Life guarding, First Aid, CPR, & AED course prior to start of the first camp session. ● Complete a background check and provide other forms and details. ● Promote a culture of open communication and mutual respect. COUNCIL COMPETENCIES ● Ensure diversity and pluralism are embraced and incorporated into the work of the council.● Support the Girl Scout mission, vision, and values of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law.● Complete a background check. ORGANIZATION REQUIREMENTS ● Complete a Health History and physical exam prior to camp.● Must completed and be certified in American Red Cross Life guarding, First Aid, CPR, & AED course prior to start of the first camp session● Effectively manage financial and physical resources.● Exhibit effective communication skills and provide exemplary customer service to both internal and external customers.● Report incidents of abuse or potential abuse involving campers to the appropriate authorities.
