Position Purpose Summary Statement The Investigator for the Office of Police Oversight performs all functions related to planning and conducting unbiased, highly sensitive investigations that, at times, include high public visibility of controversial issues of a highly sensitive nature. Assists in all areas as assigned including but not limited to serving on-call 24 hours a day for critical incident response, and performs all investigative activities including writing formal incident reports and does related work as assigned. Works with considerable initiative, independent judgment, and meticulous follow-through, under general guidance. All candidates must submit a current copy of their resume and introductory letter Required functions The Investigator performs investigative functions; responds to critical incident situations and takes appropriate action as assigned; plans, organizes, and conducts investigations. Obtains necessary approval in support of investigations; performs highly confidential investigative work to obtain info, gather evidence, or verifies facts; reviews applicable documentation, laws, policies, rules, etc. Deals with individuals who are difficult, hostile or distressed; interviews and/or interrogates individuals to elicit sensitive info or info they are reluctant to volunteer. Composes complex reports, correspondence or other written work; explains technical or other complex details orally. Knowledge of public policy; background with Labor Unions; acquires and maintains current expertise of relevant laws, regulations, policies, standards or procedures and analyzes, interprets and applies details to specific issues. Plans, organizes, and conducts research Studies into policy and training issues. Explains or justifies conclusions, Comfortable in confrontational situations and conflict; Background in Diverse communities, Background with individuals suffering from a mental health component. Knowledge of medical terminology and firearms; findings or recommendations. Assists in preparing formal recommendations to the Director of Police Oversight. Requirements: Knowledge of investigative and interviewing techniques; of time management; of management practices; of principles and practices of computer operations/Microsoft 360. Background with crime scenes, accident sense, and personal injury scenes; Requires strong public relations skills in dealing with difficult and potentially hostile individuals. Expertise to conduct unconscious an implicit bias investigations; to maintain confidentiality and display high standards of ethical conduct; to interpret and apply related regulations, policies and procedures. Expertise to gather, analyze, and interpret large amounts of data and to draw reasonable conclusions based on ' analysis conducted; to develop, organize and present data and details into clear and concise written and oral reports; to display a high-level of initiative, effort and commitment toward completing assignments in a timely manner; to show understanding, courtesy, tact, empathy and concern. Deal with people who are difficult, hostile and/or distressed; to establish and maintain effective relationships with other officials, employees and the general public; to deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations. Expertise and willingness to work on-call; to attend daytime and evening meetings as needed. Min Requirements Graduation from an accredited college or university, plus 5 (5) years of related work background in the field of law, law enforcement, investigation, inspection, or a related position, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and background, provided that the min degree requirement is met.
