Strong people skills and expertise to connect withdonors' interests and needs. Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated expertise to work with diverse communities. Preferred: J.D. andlegal practice background. Background in fundraising and development in a college or university setting. Campaign fundraising background.Familiarity with the legal community. Affinity for legal education and higher education in Minnesota. Note: There are up to 1-2openings for this position. Duties/Responsibilities: Build and maintain a portfolio of at least 150 major gift ($25,000plus capacity) prospects. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification,cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Develop an annual major gift work plan, including specific fundraising, prospect development,and programmatic goals in consultation with the Director of Advancement and the University of Minnesota Foundation. Conduct a min of120 personal visits and 30 additional substantive contacts annually with donors and prospects. These visits will be conducted forqualification, cultivation, solicitation, gift closure, and stewardship purposes. Develop and maintain a thorough working understanding ofthe School (including the Law Library, Clinics, research centers, student body, and faculty) and the Law School's vision and philanthropicpriorities to present effectively and compellingly its case and status to prospects and donors. Develop major and planned giftproposals, memoranda of agreement and other written communicationand documentation as needed for major gift fundraising purposes. Complete and file timely reports of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing the University of Minnesota Foundation DMS database, employingdiscretion while recording details of relevance to Law School Advancement and University-wide development and alumni relations staff. Plan and implement major gift fundraising trips - to qualify new prospects, cultivate and advance major gift prospects towardsolicitation, solicit and steward donors and prospects. These trips may be conducted independently by the Major Gifts Officer or inconjunction with appropriate Law School leadership. When appropriate, these trips should be coordinated with Law School Alumni Relations,Career Center and Admissions. With travel to areas staffed by the UMF Regional Development team, the Major Gifts Officer should coordinatehis/her travel plans and donor strategies with the appropriate regional development director. Work proactively with colleagues in theLaw School and across the University of Minnesota development community on prospect coordination and donor strategies. Involve facultymembers, as appropriate, in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donors. Utilize or create strategic engagement opportunities tocultivate alumni and prospective donors (including current and former Law School faculty) for major or planned gifts. Activities can includeparticipation on volunteer boards/committees, speaking to students. This job necessitates travel within the Twin Citiesmetropolitan area, the state of Minnesota, and nationally, as well as attendance at occasional evening and weekend activities.Program/Unit Description: The University of Minnesota Law School is at the midpoint of a comprehensive fundraising campaign.The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts, outright or deferred, to theLaw School. This individual works with alumni and friends of the Law School, including law firms and other organizations, to determine theirphilanthropic interests and motivations for giving to the Law School. This person is a critical member of the development team, ensuringgiving success to enable this elite Law School to further its ambitious goals. The Major Gifts Officer maintains a professional, committedworking relationship with the University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF).
