North Shore Animal League America is the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world. We are a non-profit organization. Since 1944, the Animal League has saved the lives of more than 1,000,000 animals through adoption, rescue and advocacy initiatives. The League reaches across the country to rescue, nurture and adopt pets into happy and loving homes, and over the past decade we have placed over 200,000 puppies, kittens, cats and dogs into carefully screened homes. The Animal League works with animal shelters across the country and has recently developed and is seeking support for a national, multi-dimensional initiative that extends its reach to include universities, schools and youth serving organizations.We are seeking a Director of Foundation Relations to lead the effort to build and sustain relationships with national foundations and to leverage resources of the foundation community to help NSALA's reach its organizational goals and grow its new national initiative. He/she will lead the effort to expand the organization's foundation support by identifying new prospects and cultivating and stewarding relationships with program officers at regional and national foundations and corporations.The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of relevant leadership background in successful corporate and foundation relations and be recognized for significantly expanding support for key initiatives. A demonstrated expertise to plan, execute and successfully develop partnerships that lead to transformational support is essential. Confirmed knowledge of, and top-level contact with, major sources of corporate and foundation funding is required. Applicant must have a proven track of authoring successful proposals to foundations and corporations for grants of at least $100,000. He/she will conduct research and contact foundation and corporate contribution prospects, prepare proposals as well as written research reports, will identify new donor prospects, and oversee prospect screening. He/she will be the lead grant writer and liaison with institutional funders, working closely to align grant sources to key strategic initiatives.This position necessitates an extensive understanding of foundation and corporate contribution fields. Knowledge of cause-related marketing and other means of acquiring corporate support is a plus. Also required are: a high-level of professionalism, collegiality, initiative and self-motivation, as well as an expertise to work as a member of a diverse team to acquire familiarity with the goals and objectives of NSALA and its initiatives. The expertise to travel extensively is essential.The successful applicant will also possess the following requirements: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred. Knowledge of and background in philanthropic foundations and corporate contributions as well as an understanding of current trends in funding. Good understanding of processes, systems, and databases; competency in Raiser's Edge or comparable software. A record of success in conceptualizing and articulating long-range program and financial development goals and expertise to quickly grasp programmatic concepts and package them into cogent, fundable programs. Exceptional people skills; success at cultivating strong relationships with all internal and external stakeholders: staff members, current and potential donors, corporate and foundation leaders. The expertise to write and edit compelling proposals and other relevant communications, including letters of interest and reports. Strong project management, multi-tasking, and leadership skills with sharp attention to detail. Superior people skills, including strong written and verbal communication abilities.
