SUMMARY/GOAL OF POSITION: To facilitate the learning process, as well as personal and career development, through the effective application of guidance and counseling skills ESSENTIAL TASKS OF THE POSITION: Provides guidance and counseling to individual students and groups, assisting them to gain knowledge of their academic strengths and weaknesses and make appropriate academic and career choices; Assists individual student and groups in the development of social skills, decision making and problem-solving skills, conflict resolution, family issues, and making healthy choices; Provides guidance and counseling to individual students and groups to help them improve academic progress, attendance problems and interpersonal relationships; Provides crisis intervention as appropriate; Assists parents in addressing school-related problems and issues; refers students and their families, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs, and/or outside agencies; Assists in the transition to middle school, high school and post high school options; Systematically develops and evaluates annual individual planning for high school and post high school, including career path, academic progress, high school program of studies, and post-secondary educational options; Arranges and participates in case conferences on individual students; Maintains case files and records of ongoing case activities; Promotes gender equity and advocates for equal access to programs and services for all students; Takes a leadership role in the infusion of counseling content into the curriculum, staff development, and parent educational programs; Coordinates parent education programs on issues relating to personal and academic development, making a smooth transition from elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, and planning post high school options; Provides individual counseling in response to student and/or parent requests. ORGANIZATION: Administers achievement and aptitude tests to individual students and groups; Assists in the administration of the citywide testing program; Interprets and provides test information and student data to students, professional staff, parents, agencies, and outside professional personnel as appropriate. Designs, delivers, evaluates and revises a planned, sequential, and developmentally appropriate school counseling curriculum to include lessons in academic success, career awareness and planning and personal/social growth and understanding; Plans and coordinates programs such as career and college fairs, scholarships, and other extensions of the counseling curriculum; Facilitates the instructional process in collaboration with school and community resources; Reviews and evaluates the school counseling program annually with other district counselors and administrators; establishes a planning calendar for activities; Plans, implements, maintains and evaluates the systems necessary for the support, maintenance, and improvement of the school counseling program; Contributes to a program of positive public relations; Articulates the school counseling program to students, parents, teachers, staff and community; Assists teachers in coordinating subject matter with vocational information; Consults with teachers about the relationship between learning issues and school adjustment problems and student instructional needs; Attends team meetings to confer with teachers and offer suggestions to address individual student problems; Collaborates with teachers on the relationship between teaching styles and learning styles; Participates on early intervention teams, student assistance teams and child study teams; Coordinates annual review and performs other necessary consultation with teachers and counseling for 504 students; Provides an orientation to the guidance and counseling program for new staff members; Participates in school decision making and in activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school; Cooperates and collaborates with other professionals in enhancing the education of students; communicates with administrators, teachers and staff, parents and students as to the role of the school counseling program in the overall educational process of the school; Assists in the development of policies and procedures for scheduling, course selection, registration, placement and grade reporting, using technology to perform these responsibilities effectively and efficiently; Develops and maintains skills needed to utilize technology for the acquisition and dissemination of information to assist students and staff; Demonstrates knowledge of post-secondary programs and institutions; Assists students and parents individually and in groups with post-secondary admission requirements, procedures, financial aid information, etc.; Fosters and maintains positive relationships with post-secondary institutions; Counsels students and parents with regard to entry level career opportunities; Promotes and implements programs to provide appropriate skills training and experience to non-college bound students, including apprenticeships, work study, shadowing, internships and actual on-the-job training; Receives and processes referrals from school personnel, community agencies, families, and students and refers them to the PPT process; Refers to the PPT those students whose issues appear to significantly interfere with school performance; Is a member of the Planning and Placement Team and serves as case manager when appropriate; Understands and facilitates compliance with all laws, procedures, and requirements related to the PPT process; Maintains copies of records, minutes, Individual Education Plans, master ISSIS (PCI) lists and related paper work as required by law and Pupil Personnel Services Department; Counsels assigned students as mandated through the PPT process; Monitors implementation of programs recommended by the PPT when assigned as case manager. PROFESSIONAL: Adheres to the ethical standards of state and national school counselor associations; Adheres to the preferred practices prescribed by state and national school counselor associations; Implements Board of Education and school policies and rules governing student life and conduct; Promotes and upholds district and school goals and objectives; Provides for appropriate student and parent advocacy; Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities; Cooperates with colleagues, administrators and other staff members; Demonstrates an on-going interest in educational concerns and professional learning to keep up with new trends and programs and state requirements; Maintains confidentiality regarding personal student and family information; Promotes the educational program to the community and contributes to a program of positive public relations; Maintains high standard for attendance and punctuality so that student achievement is not adversely impacted; Performs other tasks and responsibilities as delegated by the principal and/or Director of Pupil Personnel Services. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of elementary, secondary or special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents. QUALIFICATIONS: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; Prior job related experience required. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate for appropriate level of instruction and/or subjects, which must satisfy the definition of "Highly Qualified" status for content area assignment. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Background check required Screening for Tuberculosis (TB) required REPORTS TO: Principal or designated Administrator WORK YEAR: Per Teacher Contract
