Position Overview : The Development Intern will assist the efforts of the Development Department and report directly to the Associate Director of Development. The Development team is responsible for all fundraising operations of the organization. The intern will be flexible to the dynamic needs of the Department, and tasks may include assistance with donor data and administration, research on current and prospective donors, and the facilitation of donor communications. Additionally, the internship offers an educational competent, including a comprehensive overview of all aspects of a nonprofit fundraising team, such as donor relations, institutional/foundational giving, and event planning. The ideal candidate is a hardworking, strong communicator who is seeking an introduction to fundraising and nonprofit management. This position provides valuable real-work experience and the opportunity to support Spence-Chapin’s mission to serve children and families in need. The intern will report in-person to Spence-Chapin’s headquarters in Union Square, Manhattan. The position is unpaid with a minimum stipend to help cover travel costs, and Spence-Chapin will cooperate with educational institutions should the intern require such for school credit. Key Responsibilities: Communicating with donors as needed via phone, email, mail, or in-person. Conducting research into current and prospective donors. Data entry, filing, mail preparations, and other administrative tasks. Assisting all Development operations, including fundraising campaigns and events. Attending Development meetings including as related to organizational updates and strategic planning. Participating in both independent and collaborate projects as they arise. Qualifications: Currently completing an undergraduate degree, preferably in the areas of communications, social work/social welfare, business administration, public administration, nonprofit management or a related field. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work alone or as part of a team. Willingness to be flexible to the dynamic needs of the Department in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work at least 7 to 14 hours (1 or 2 days a week) during the summer months. Hours can be split between 2 half days if desired.
