Please follow this link for a closer look at what it's like to work at Children's Wisconsin: https://www.instagram.com/lifeatcw/ What You'll Do: The milk technician is responsible for the preparation, labeling, storage, and delivery of all infant feedings in the NICU with exception of those from central nutrition. This includes human milk feedings (mother's own milk and pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM)) as well as ready to feed formula. Preparation techniques must adhere to all sanitary regulations and standards established by regulating agencies and the health care facility, which should include compliance with policies related to the institution's HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Plan for Human Milk Handling) plan for enteral feedings. Will use a bar-coded safety system throughout the handling of mother's own milk and PDHM. Assists with the training of ancillary personnel as necessary. How You'll Do It: Prepares infant feedings accurately according to established written formulations following pre-established feeding preparation procedures and adhering to quality control standards and aseptic technique. Uses correct and accurate technique to measure powders and liquids. Verifies new or questionable feeding orders with registered dietitian for accuracy and obtains standardized recipes as needed. Uses clinical information system to obtain patient feeding orders and to print labels and production lists; communicates with allied health care personnel regarding feeding orders. Stores prepared infant feedings properly until delivery to patient area. Delivers prepared infant feedings properly to patient area refrigerators. Completes daily batch records for prepared feedings. Maintains PDHM provision which includes logistics such as maintenance of logs and ordering of PDHM as well as verification of orders, preparation, and delivery of PDHM. Maintains daily log of refrigeration and heating equipment temperatures, including refrigerators in the patient care unit and preparation area. Removes unused, previously prepared infant feedings form patient area refrigerators 24 hours after preparation time and discards according to established protocol. Inventories and maintains sufficient feeding room stock. Cleans and sanitizes all work surfaces in the infant feeding preparation room before and after each feeding preparation. Cleans utensils, equipment, and storage areas used in the infant feeding preparation room according to established procedures. Follows aseptic technique as well as hospital infection control policies regarding feeding handling. Wears proper protective equipment (hair covers, gloves, masks, and gowns). Calculates new formulations or standardized recipes manually or with software and obtains verification of those formulations with registered dietician responsible Demonstrates proper use of a nutrition gram scale, creamatocrit machine, and centrifuge as well as dish machine. Follows American Dietetic Association for breast milk and formula preparation. Communicates with patients' care team regarding problems with feeding orders, formula storage, or delivery. Prepares and maintains patient care unit batch or log sheets of prepared and dispensed feedings. Requirements: Ability to read, write, and perform necessary mathematical tasks acquired through a high school diploma. Current CPR certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart or American Red Cross is required. Formula/ Human Milk Technician Certification from accredited program within twelve months of hire. Ability to pass a math competency test including basic algebra. Demonstrates basic computer skills Analytical skill to resolve problems that require use of basic scientific, mathematical or technical principles.
