A Brief Overview The Emergency Communication Specialist works under the direction of the Program Manager. They receive transport requests, and participates in the coordination and efficient management of patient transfers. This includes notification of the transport team, coordinating the mode of transport, and working within numerous departmental data entry systems. Operates a variety of communication equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems. Acts as a central communication source for the department while performing essential functions within the CHOP institution such as, Emergency Department Referral calls, Campus Wide Emergency Response Plan (Trauma Transports, CODE Blue Activations, Medical Emergencies, Emergency Department Resuscitations, Emergency Department patient screen process, PICU Tier activations, helicopter communication, and helipad clearance. What you will do Practice Follows Nursing Process to deliver safe care; assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation: Participates in the efficient management of patient transfers Triages incoming/outgoing request and arranges for immediate transfers in/out of the hospital Demonstrates proper completion of patient triaging templates based off chief complaint for transports, consults, referrals and emergent notification requests Transfer/assists calls to the designated Emergency Transport Communication Coordinator/ Facilitator and Medical Command Physician Works with bed management to assist with the coordination of bed assignments/admissions to the hospital Partners with Emergency Transport Communication Coordinator/Facilitator regarding appropriate triage, accepting service, team composition and mode of transport Liaison between referring hospital, transport team and accepting CHOP service Enters/obtains patient demographics into computer based systems during initial call for transport process Updates all departmental logs, Trauma Activations, ED Resuscitation, Code Blue and Rapid Response Updates departmental database for each transport and referral request. Utilizes departmental notification templates. Responsible for activation and initiation of campus wide Emergency response plan Responsible for activation and initiation of numerous hospital downtime streams a. Hospital page assurance b. Epic downtime procedures c. Emergency preparedness Communication Operates a variety of communication equipment Acts as a central communication source for all components of the transport process Coordination and efficient management of campus wide emergency response notifications Monitor the haste system; Philadelphia fire board for trauma activations Triages and acts decisively for Emergent Situations described in the hospital "Campus Wide Emergency Response Plan"; CODE Line, patient and non-patient medical emergencies Collaboration Demonstrates effective teamwork as a member of the interdisciplinary care team, fostering and exemplifying a culture of respect. Recognizes/addresses situations where disrespectful collaboration may impact patient care and/or create non-collaborative relationships. Seeks resources as needed to resolve situations involving incivility and/or disrespect. Develops and implements effective partnerships with members of the Communication Center staff; delegates tasks effectively to assure comprehensive nursing care is provided. Develops and sustains professional therapeutic relationships with referring and CHOP clinical staff Collaborates with all members of the communication center and Medical Command Physician for patient acceptance. Coordinates information among, ambulance, aircraft, referring hospitals and CHOP personnel for quick and efficient patient transport according to departmental procedures Education Qualifications High School Diploma / GED Required Experience Qualifications Previous experience in a health related field Preferred Related transport communication experience Preferred Skills and Abilities This individual must have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. This individual must possess a clear, strong speaking voice and have a strong medical terminology understanding. Flexible, cooperative, outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills is essential. Computer entry experience and good typing skills are necessary. The ability to multi-task and have strong prioritization skills is required. Ability to efficiently collect key data points from a variety of information sources to ensure accuracy. Licenses and Certifications Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania Department of Health - upon hire - Preferred To carry out its mission, CHOP is committed to supporting the health of our patients, families, workforce, and global community.
