DIVISION: NORTHROP GRUMMAN MARINE SYSTEMS - FABRICATION PRIMARY FUNCTION: Determine the process, flow rates, cycle times, temperatures, and sequences, and set up and operate furnaces, ovens, and equipment to anneal, carbonize, harden, heat treat, stress relieve, malcomize, nitride, normalize, quench, and temper a variety of materials. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Gas and electric draw furnaces and ovens, induction and resistance heaters and power supplies, handling racks, carts, gas generators, Alnor dewpointer, controls, flow meter, gauges, recording instruments, quenching and tempering tanks, torches, hoists, cranes, hardness testers, tongs, hammers, wrenches, files, gloves, face shields, respirator, leather aprons, safety glasses, etc. MATERIAL: All ferrous and nonferrous metals, alloys, castings, fabrications, sand, salt, oil, water, asbestos, bricks, metal coatings, gases such as nitrogen, ammonia, propane, and endo; rags, emery paper, dye penetrate, etc. DIRECTION OF OTHERS : Provide guidance to Furnace Tender in the proper methods, sequences, and times for treating materials. WORKING PR0CEDURE: THE FOLLOWING ARE THE USUAL MAJOR JOB DUTIES BUT THIS JOB DESCRIPTION DOES NOT PRECLUDE THE PERFORMANCE OF OTHER DUTIES BY THE INCUMBENT, NOR THE QUESTION BEING RAISED ON THE PROPER RATE OF PAY FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. Receive work assignment from supervision. Read and follow safety regulations and procedures and MI package including drawings, change notices, specifications, schedules and work authorizations. Determine the appropriate process and equipment to use and establish oven temperatures, time limits, quenching medium, enrichments and operation sequences to produce the material to the specified hardness and condition. Establish the best way to cool treated material to maintain appropriate cooling rates. Determine from the material, size and configuration of a variety of parts the number of coils, turns, amount of power, time and equipment required to heat and stress relieve items by induction or resistance methods. Start, operate, and adjust ovens and furnaces and heaters according to the selected process by setting recorders and controls to the specified temperature, pressure, flow rates, and time cycle, injecting and maintaining. atmospheric gas concentrations inside ovens, and monitoring parts for proper color/ temperature. Perform spark, files and hardness tests, investigate material hardness and treatment problems, and determine cause for not meeting specification; Refer metallurgical problems and samples to the materials laboratory for analysis as necessary. Maintain a thorough knowledge of a variety of heat treating and annealing processes and their effect on various materials in order to obtain proper treatment. Sign off operations completed and obtain 1st piece and final inspection sign offs on operation sheets as required. Maintain tools equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition. Make proper time charge entries and record data as required. Relay pertinent job information to employees assigned to the same machines on following shifts. Perform other work of equal or lower classification as required. This is Union represented position.The application period for the job is estimated to be 20 days from the job posting date.
