The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office will be considering applicants for the following employment opportunity Temporary Maintenance Worker The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a temporary maintenance worker to work in the Facilities and Maintenance Department at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction located in Billerica, MA. We are looking for positive, reliable, and honest individual who will take pride in their work and can thrive in a challenging setting. The applicant must be able to work on a flexible schedule from 6:00AM to 6:00PM at the discretion of management. This is a non-exempt seasonal contractual position. Applicants will work on a contractual hourly basis. The applicant must comply with all institutional policies regarding safety and security within the correctional facility. The individual selected for this position shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency. This position reports to the Assistant Deputy Superintendent I / Maintenance, Facilities Manager and/or the Assistant Superintendent. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Ability to work on the grounds of a correctional facility and other MSO facilities and work within the constraints of a correctional setting. Responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds surrounding a correctional facility. Plants flowers, mows, pulls weeds, repairs structures, and maintains grounds outside of MSO facilities. Perform grounds keeping and building maintenance duties. Cut lawn using power or riding mower and trim and edge around walkways, flower beds, and walls. Perform routine maintenance duties such as applying plaster, fixing fountains, and other duties. Sweep walkways of debris. Install tents and other outdoor structures. Cut down tree limbs and maintain trees on the MSO grounds. Rake, mulch, and prune the grounds as needed. Water plants and grass as needed. Ability to keep accurate records, tool/equipment inventory and generate timely reports as required. Operate machinery and equipment to perform the duties noted above. Knowledge of construction safety requirements. Knowledge and/or willingness to be trained on components found in a correctional facility. Must be able to work independently and well with others. Ability to think on their feet and troubleshoot any number of problems. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Be punctual, reliable, and well organized, having the ability to prioritize tasks. Must be able to work in adverse environments including hot, cold, dust/fumes, dark and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Must be able to crawl, kneel, climb ladders, squat, and stand for long periods. Must be able to push or pull heavier loads with the assistance of mechanical devices, work on lifts and ladders. Maintaining electronic and physical reports, logs, and works on and documents status of work orders assigned. Strictly adheres to the Tool Control Policy in addition to other MSO Policies that apply. Perform and/or assist in other facilities and maintenance duties as needed and required by management. Working Conditions: Standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. May be required to work alone in an isolated area. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 lbs. May work under exposure to adverse weather conditions. Qualifications: Prior experience working in a facilities/maintenance department or outside grounds preferred. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred. Must have an active valid driver’s license and the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts. Graduate from high school or possess a GED equivalency certificate. Strong written and communication skills. Ability to attend any other training as required by the department. Must have own transportation. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Candidates must have an active valid driver’s license and the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts. Candidates must also be able to successfully pass a criminal background check. Contractual Hourly Rate: $25.00 an hour with no additional benefits.
