Job Title: Scientist/Engineer Job Summary: Join FedWriters as a Scientist/Engineer and play a crucial role in advancing cutting-edge weather research with NOAA's Weather Program Office (WPO). As a key member of the Science, Technology, and Society Division, you will be at the forefront of coordinating and managing funding competitions, shaping the future of weather research initiatives. The NOAA WPO is a programmatic office located in NOAA Research that supports world-class weather research to save lives, reduce property damage, and enhance the national economy by selecting and funding research that supports and fosters collaborations with NOAA's research laboratories and the weather enterprise. WPO's Programs work closely with the National Weather Services to develop and transition weather research to improve knowledge about tropical cyclones, severe storms, extreme precipitation, air pollution, and social science - and to integrate weather, water, and climate forecasting and mitigation. Responsibilities Include: Managing Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX) funding competitions Managing and tracking existing VORTEX grants Building connections with WPO's social, behavioral, and economic science (SBES) team Building connection with NSSL's VORTEX team Synthesizing social science and severe weather research efforts into applicable findings and value stories Supporting the Science, Technology, and Society Division research to operations teams by helping them identify relevant mechanisms for research transition applications throughout NOAA and the broader weather enterprise Supporting projects funded by WPO Science, Technology, and Society Division by providing project management expertise and oversight as needed Scheduling, planning, and facilitating meetings with internal staff, external researchers, and stakeholders. Assisting with other WPO activities as needed Required Qualifications and Skills: Bachelor's degree from the field of Social Science, meteorology, or a related field such as atmospheric science At least 8+ years of professional and/or academic experience Advanced degrees or certifications may qualify for shorter periods of required experience. Understanding of severe weather research Strong editing and reviewing experience Ability to translate scientific content for a variety of audiences Desired: MA/MS from the field of social science or meteorology or a related field such as atmospheric science Experience with severe weather research, specifically tornado research Previous experience managing grant competition process Work Setting and Environment: Monday - Friday, normal business hours Work is to be performed remotely Travel as needed for conferences and meetings How FedWriters Will Compensate and Appreciate You: FedWriters offers team members the opportunity to gain a lasting impression in this fast-growing small business.
