General Description of the Job Class To perform a variety of routine and advanced technical duties related to the purchasing and procurement of medications and other pharmacy products. To monitor, track, analyze, and report on medication shortages and pharmaceutical supply chain disturbances. Duties and Responsibilities of this Level The duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist include but are not limited to the following:manage all aspects of placing daily medication orders from pharmaceutical wholesalers and specialty distributors to ensure medication and supply availabilitymaintain contracted and preferred items lists within internal databases for all inpatient pharmacy inventory areasmanage pharmacy inventory levels on a daily basis create and track purchase requisitions through SAP for purchases of critical medicationscomplete Controlled Substance Ordering System (CSOS) orders for controlled substances for multiple pharmaciesidentify and analyze drug shortages based on their potential impact to the health systemprovide drug shortage mitigation strategy recommendation to Procurement Pharmacistsmonitor and maintain medication backorders on wholesaler ordering platformrespond to drug recall alertsupdate preferred inventory products in inventory software to align with GPO preferred productsassist with management of vaccine distributionrespond to medication sourcing and pricing information requestsresearch and respond to Center for Medication Policy drug information requestsinterface with outside vendors in a professional manner, representing DUH to the outside community, including manufacturers, wholesalers, and other vendorsreconcile Duke blood factor purchases to provide appropriate billing account information to Cardinal Health participate in efforts to minimize drug expense on WAC accountsmonitor Public Health Service program (340B) drug purchases and maintain compliance with 340B program requirementssupport Duke Hospital compliance with Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA)collaborate with Vizient to identify and implement purchasing conversion opportunities to increase compliance with preferred drug recommendations Minimum Qualifications Education Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program with one year of experience in program administration or event production. -OR- Two years of postsecondary education with three years of experience in program administration or event production. Preferred experience Work requires analytical, communication, and organizational skills generally obtained through completion of a post-secondary education program in an accounting, business, healthcare policy/administration, clinical discipline, or related field. Experience Preferred experience 3 years of pharmacy experience or purchasing/procurement experience or related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to make decisions independently by applying appropriate critical thinking and problem-solving variety of situations.Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to accurately and simultaneously manage significant amounts of detail.Excellent oral and written communication skillsProficiency using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
