NEW YORK, NY Friends of the Children - New York (Friends NY) is excited to announce the launch of a new Volunteer Program for individuals who are passionate and committed to working with youth in PreK to High school across the 5 NYC boroughs. Our new volunteer program offers a flexible and unique leadership opportunity that allows emerging community leaders, youth leaders, college and graduate students, Interns, and social workers to connect to their communities, mentor a young person, learn more about our organization, expand their network and demonstrate care for our communities. Friends NY is a chapter of a nationwide organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty through salaried, professional mentoring. We select children facing multiple systemic obstacles from the five NYC boroughs and commit to working with those children from kindergarten to graduation - 12+ years, no matter what. Volunteers will work with a Friend to mentor a group of youth–a minimum of two youths weekly and eight youth monthly. OVERVIEW: A Volunteer will serve as a positive adult role model to elementary children and/or adolescents and develop loving, caring, and sustained relationships with each child. For each child, a Volunteer in collaboration with the Friend will set positive expectations; nurture and promote each child’s strength, talents, and abilities; help ensure physical and emotional well-being; teach life and academic skills; provide enrichment activities; and model responsible behavior. Benefits: Monthly self-care stipend Monthly MTA stipend Monthly Phone bill stipend Professional growth and development First Aid/CPR and other Child Safety Training Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent Current college or university students Willingness to commit to mentoring at least 2 youth a week Willingness to undergo background checks and other required city required compliance processes for working with children.
