The Irrigation Maintenance Technician is responsible for designing, installing, troubleshooting, and general repairs of all irrigation systems throughout the City of Hutchinson. The work involves operation and preventive maintenance work on a variety of specialized irrigation systems and equipment. Other duties include, conducting studies to determine deficiencies or ineffective water flow/distribution, analyzing water loss and layout of irrigation systems, participating in determining strategies for new and existing irrigation systems. A Day in the Life: Design new and redesign current irrigation systems to the highest standards possible for function and water efficiency, providing drawings for all new and redesigned systems. Responsible for spring startup and winter blow down of irrigation systems throughout the city and repairs as necessary. Responsible for routine maintenance and periodic system checks of all irrigation systems throughout the city. Troubleshoots all irrigations issues and repairs appropriately, this may include issues involving electrical, valve, controller, heads or leaks throughout the system. Checks and program system controllers for optimum performance relative to the season and does seasonal adjustments as necessary. Operates, maintains and assists with installation and conversion to smart irrigation controls. Operates and maintains equipment pertaining to irrigation installation such as, trenchers, backhoe, skid steer, gators Assist by locating irrigation lines, valve boxes, and irrigation heads when necessary for construction or other landscape projects. Leads crews in proper irrigation installation procedures. Provides periodic servicing for city water amenities such as fountains, pool, and spray parks, to include skimmer and filter clean out and timer and valve adjustments. Performs checks on back flow preventers and water meters to insure optimal performance and adherence to city codes. Read and approve irrigation plans from outside contractors for city projects. What You Will Need to be Successful: EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required, EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 3 years working in the irrigation installation and maintenance industry or related field is required. CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Valid driver's license is required. Valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of start date is required.
