Highway Engineering Technician

$27.40 hourly, $56,922 annually, Full Time. Benefits including vacation, sick, funeral leave, and holiday pay. Also included in this benefit package is health, dental, and life insurance; medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts (Section 125 Plan) and supplemental insurance; deferred compensation plan and Public Employees Retirement (PERA).The purpose of this position is to provide professional field and office civil engineering work. Duties include, but are not limited to: project inspection and materials testing; construction plan preparation; preliminary and construction surveying; and performing additional tasks as assigned by the Assistant Public Works Director. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: *Performs inspection duties in bituminous plants, on paving construction, on grading projects, on gravel base, on concrete construction, and on bridge construction.*Makes sketches, both preliminary and as a guide to other professionals; prepares and maintains maps.*Prepares reports and maintains records, as required.*Develops complex engineering computations; prepares plans and specifications; draws plans and profiles; performs engineering research.*Utilizes various machines and equipment in the delivery of service, such as computer, calculator, air tester, mechanical shakers, metal detectors, drafting equipment, hammers, shovels, and tape.*Operates survey equipment including Trimble GPS, Robotic Total Station and level on preliminary and construction surveys.*Reviews and receives various reports and documents, including production reports, billing invoices, lab reports, contractor wage reports, hydraulic reports, bridge plans, daily construction diary, weekly construction reports; daily plant reports, spot check reports, pile driving report, and test pile report.*Assists in the inspection of County and Township bridges that are under the responsibility of the Douglas County Engineer; records all the deficiencies that are found.*Updates bridge inventories; reports findings to County Engineer; reports all bridge deficiencies and needed repairs to appropriate governing agencies.*Complies with all rules and policies in order to maintain a safe work environment.*Reliable, predictable attendance and punctuality.*Other duties, as assigned or apparent. Required Minimum Qualifications at Hire: *High School Diploma or GED*Associate's degree/diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, or related field required.*Valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License required. Preferred / Desirable Qualifications *Knowledge of Trimble GPS surveying equipment and methods required;*Knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D and Soft Tree Road design software required. *Experience in Engineering, Design, Surveying or related field preferred. *Possession of various MnDOT Inspection Certifications desired.*Associate's Degree/Diploma in Civil Technology*Ability to operate Autodesk Civil 3 D 2017 and Soft Tree Road design software for highway engineering.*Operational knowledge in Trimble GPS Survey Equipment and the Trimble Business Center software.*MN DOT Certification in Bituminous, Concrete, Grading/Base and Erosion Control fields.
